What will the successful candidate be doing?

We are looking to recruit one Senior Interaction Designer to work on The Single Trade Window Programme. You are an experienced designer who can blend between being able to oversee and complete projects confidently whilst influencing and mentoring others.

This is a high-profile and stretching role, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to broaden their experience and develop their skills in a fast-paced environment.

In this role you will assure the work of our Technical Delivery Partner (TDP) who is designing and building the Single Trade Window. You will ensure users can complete their goals and government delivers its strategic and policy intent. You will use best practice and standards to confirm designs will enable usable and accessible services. You will also assess mapped out user journeys and processes to help the TDP to identify and solve design problems.

You will work in a group of UCD professionals and alongside policy, product, and process owners to ensure that the features that are being designed are informed by evidence and put our users first. You will collaborate with user researchers to understand the needs of the users in a specific area and find ways to meet those needs. You will work closely with all UCD professions to ensure the full end-to-end picture is joined up, and you will manage and develop the capability of more junior team members.

The Senior Interaction Designer will fulfil a range of roles in the programme:

As the Senior Interaction Design Assurer for the STW Programme, you will be part of a team that includes user researchers, service designers, product managers, and technology experts. Your main role will be to lead on ensuring our Technical Delivery Partners (TDP) produces user-friendly and accessible products that are part of complex end-to-end services. Some of your work will also involve working across multiple Government Departments.

You will be a part of our active and supportive design community, within HMRC and across government.

As a senior interaction designer, you will:

  • Lead hands-on design assurance and thinking for this complex project
  • Use best practice and standards to confirm designs will produce usable and accessible services
  • Collaborate with user researchers to understand the needs of the users in a specific area and find ways to meet those needs
  • Assess mapped out user journeys and processes to help identify and solve design problems
  • Assure prototypes and concepts for accuracy and effectiveness
  • Communicate and test your ideas and suggested changes with design partners
  • Help our TDP deliver the design process, participating in research activities, workshops and contribute to best practice design decisions and outcomes
  • Line manage, support and mentor other designers and UCD professionals - providing them with guidance, support, constructive feedback and direction
  • Lead and participate in peer review sessions with other profession members
  • Actively participate in the STW Assurance Network as well as HMRC and cross-government design communities, both digitally and face-to-face
  • Proactively seek new learning opportunities and look to continually improve by gaining feedback from your peers and the business

Essential Criteria: Essential skills and experience

You’ll be able to evidence expertise and a track record in:

  1. Designing systems for use across services using a variety of prototyping methods and identifying the simplest of approaches.
  2. Meeting the needs of users and achieving policy intent across a variety of channels, bringing insight and expertise in how user needs have changed over time to ensure they’re met by the business.
  3. Designing within constraints and to delivery timescales, including identifying, communicating and working within constraints, and pushing back to ensure constraints are valid.
  4. Working with consequential or complex risks, building consensus between services or independent stakeholders, developing and using key shared artefacts such as journey maps and prototypes.
  5. Strong stakeholder communication, including interpreting the needs of technical and business stakeholders and managing stakeholder expectations and support or host difficult discussions within the team or with diverse senior stakeholders.
  6. Working in and across Agile teams – including helping teams to manage and visualise outcomes, prioritise work and adhere to agreed minimum viable product (MVP), priorities and scope.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Mentoring or developing interaction designers.
  • Working to the Government Service Standard.
