Job description

Risk Intelligence Services (RIS) is currently working with our Chief Data Information Office (CDIO), as part of a HMRC Programme - Protect Connect Programme (PCP) - to build and deploy new services utilising the integrated SAS visualisation tools to redefine how end users can generate insight from our information. This is a high priority Programme with Government Major Project Portfolio Status (GMPP). You will join a RIS Configuration Team who are configuring the SAS tools and many data sets for 6500 end users.

PCP is a large and complex IT project using both Agile and Waterfall methodologies and internal and external expertise to deliver a broad range of technical and business process products to challenging deadlines.

Compliance & Risk Engineering Solutions Team (CREST) is responsible for the configuration of the vital components of the latest PCP system: Investigation, Detection & Risking System (IDRS) and we will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing these components, actioning service level requests from our end-users and resolving incidents as they occur.

As a Senior Test Engineer, you will work closely with Scrum Teams and CDIO Test Managers to lead on the delivery of testing of the application and integration of business components into the wider solution. You will undertake testing of complex components and work closely with specialists to deliver IDRS into a ‘business as usual’ live service. You will take a logical and analytical approach to problem solving and investigating issues as they arise. You will mentor and advise team members in testing practices and have a good understanding of the development lifecycle and the role of software testing. You will nurture good practice and processes to improve the quality of the product.

Person specification

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Use software development skills within a testing context to resolve complex issues/ defects and provide technical support to test engineers to write and execute functional and non-functional testing
  • Continuously review the testing approach and strive for improvements to build a robust service
  • Identify new test techniques and tools, investigating opportunities for automation
  • Educate and support the delivery teams with testing and work with delivery teams to define ‘quality’
  • Promote team upskilling to meet new technology requirements and challenges.

Skills: 

  • Able to design and execute a wide range of testing techniques and communicate the results to both technical and non-technical partners. Able to make decisions about the environment needed for testing and coach others. Able to raise defects with the business and help prioritise them based on defect severity
  • Have a proven understanding of different tools and techniques. Able to advise others on testing techniques and frameworks
  • Able to think creatively, ask the right questions, and critically evaluate and communicate findings to a larger team. Leads investigative work into problems and opportunities in existing processes, driving the collection of information and creation of recommendations for  Can absorb large amounts of conflicting information and use it to determine solution. 

Essential Criteria: 

  • Experience of functional testing of software and data products
  • Experience of investigation and resolution of complex issues/ defects
  • SC vetted or willing to apply upon appointment.

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • A ten-minute presentation on a piece of functional testing work on software development and data products you’ve recently done and the challenges you faced to deliver this to time.
