Our client originates, develops, builds, owns and operates renewable energy generation projects. Due to a recent business re-structure, they currently have a unique opportunity available for a capable, experienced, ambitious and motivated individual to join them in the role of Development Director.

Responsibilities

Management of the energy development team and aspects of business planning:

• Work closely with the Managing Director and Commercial Director to formulate and implement the annual business plan.
• Direction of the development portfolio to meet the requirements of the business plan and growth of the wind development pipeline.
• Line management responsibility for the development team, including resource planning and management, project management and direction, longer term staff development, training, appraisal and recruitment.
• Supporting Development Managers in the promotion of development projects through scoping, planning application (and where necessary planning appeal) phases in line with the business plan milestones and success criteria.

Business Development:

• Shared accountability for the development of new business opportunities in existing or new low carbon / flexible energy sectors, in particular expanding the wind development portfolio.
• Employment of a rigorous approach towards business development, including preparation and presentation of detailed feasibility assessments to gain both client and board approvals.
• In collaboration with the Commercial Director, development of proposal documents, presentations and materials for customers and partners as well as ensure robust financial models are prepared and maintained for all projects.
• Maintaining high quality relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

Technical and Commercial:

• Technical evaluation of new wind, decentralised and flexible energy development opportunities, including the commercial viability and financial modelling of the projects.
• Key involvement in the procurement, financial close and construction phases of developments to deliver operational assets.

Requirements

Experience and skills

• Proven experience in assessing the feasibility of projects and executing the planning and consenting process of commercial scale energy projects, in particular wind.
• Experience of managing projects beyond the development / consenting phase through the procurement, funding and construction phases of development
• Project management of complex projects in the energy field to cost and programme
• Experience of consultation with both internal and external stakeholders and in developing strong working relationships with key actors.
• Experience leading a function, business unit or team
• Strong project management skills and experience, with the ability to manage complex projects including the risks and uncertainty with external stakeholders and an ever changing political, legislative and regulatory backdrop
• Technically knowledgeable along with a strong understanding of the environmental and planning constraints surrounding the development of decentralised and flexible generation projects

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree qualified as a minimum in an appropriate technical field/discipline
• Qualification from relevant professional institution
• Well-rounded demonstrable commercial management skills – including development and control of budgets, financial appraisals, project evaluation, contract negotiation and management and overall project management

Additional desirable skills

• An understanding of the routes to market for decentralised energy solutions, including revenue stacking, capacity market auctions and the energy and balancing markets.
• Detailed knowledge of connecting projects to both private wires and publicly owned utilities including the negotiation of connection agreements.
