Job Description:

This role is part of a busy support team to Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) and Royal Navy Hydrographic ships. Primarily the role is responsible for all Naval Architecture activities for RFA Tankers, Solid Support Ships and the UK's Ice Patrol Ship. The role is the focal point for the liaison between Class Societies, Flag State and the Naval Authority for certification activities and design changes. The role requires regular ship and dockyard visits to support our waterfront super intendents and ships' staff.

Routine activities include developing stability operator guidance and applying for approval from the relevant organisations this will include undertaking inclining experiments, provide assurance to dry docking evolutions and other dock yard activities, attending design reviews to provide guidance on ship integration and being part of a team providing an out of hours emergency response service.

As the role involves developing shipboard operator guidance for stability and structures, a working knowledge of current commercial shipping regulations is desirable, with an understanding of MOD safety management systems.

This post is responsible for RFA Northern cluster ships, and the H&P SVHO class and IPS within Naval Ships Support.

The key responsibilities and activities of the post are as follows:

  • Manage the delivery of delegated aspects of naval architecture, ship design, post design services, policy and safety & environmental activities, including:
  • Delivering or delegating Naval Architecture aspects of the MOD Ship Safety Certificate (MSSC) submissions primarily in the areas of Stability, Strength and Escape, Evacuation and Rescue
  • Leading Inclining Experiments, On-board stability operator guidance updates, Docking assessment, Intact & Damage Assessments
  • Leading Material State safety surveys (Watertight Integrity, EER, Structural Strength & Towing Assessments

In order to meet the requirement of this opportunity, it is essential that candidates meet these qualifications, experience and skills:

  • Engineering degree, ideally in Naval Architecture (or equivalent degree supported by suitable experience)
  • Competence using naval architecture software with knowledge of SEASAFE
  • An applied knowledge Tanker and Cargo Ship rules and regulations
  • Experience of inclining experiments
  • Hands-on experience in carrying out stability and structural analyses
  • Knowledge of Ships Classification, Statutory and MOD Shipping Regulations

It would be desirable if candidates could demonstrate the following:

  • Membership of Professional Institution and CEng status, or working towards it
  • Knowledge of applying the Polar Code
  • Experience in new build shipping projects and working within a modern ship building environment, ship structural calculations using FEA and ship survivability and vulnerability
