Phipps Northampton Brewery Company has returned to its roots in a Victorian brewery in the heart of Northampton, 40 years after Phipps' Bridge Street Brewery closed.

Drop in and see the oldest new brewery in the country. The Albion Brewery Bar is open Tuesday to Saturday night for the most characterful drinking experience in the county where customers can actually watch the beer being brewed as they drink and dine with us.

Phipps, probably the best revived, heritage brewery in the world, as they might say further down Bridge Street!

We are looking for someone who has a sense of history and an understanding of the unique character of Phipps NBC and the Albion Brewery. Our manager should have a passion for local food and drink, a good knowledge of real ale and aspire to run the most characterful real ale bar in town. Bringing in new customers with music, comedy, quizzes and other attractions in keeping with the tone of the Albion Brewery, will be a key part of the job. In months and years to come, a large venue and function room will also become part of the operation as we expand into upper floors of the Victorian Albion Brewery.

Our Bar Manager will be responsible for supporting the commercial success of The Albion Brewery Bar. There is a deputy bar manager in place with a team of bar and kitchen staff including an experienced cellarman and senior bar person. The current Albion Brewery Bar Manager is moving within the business to become overall Deputy Brewery Manager so will be on hand to support the new manager.

The new manager must constantly adapt to ensure that the bar is profitable, pleasant and safe and that it is run in accordance with the law and ethical guidelines. The role requires effective staff management, commercial and practical skills.

Ideally the new manager will also hold a personal alcohol license and clean diving license in order to participate in the wide range of off-site activities such as beer festivals and food fairs Phipps takes part in.

Being a full part of the growing team of this company requires a can do, flexible outlook, tackling any task that presents itself in a bustling brewery and bar. Although your primary responsibility is to the bar as a distinct business, everyone at Phipps is encouraged to pitch in when needed at such events as the Northampton County Beer Festival and other company events.

Typical work activities

  • Front-of-house bar work
  • Stock selection and control
  • Accounting
  • Interacting with customers (including serving food and drink) and ensuring that high standards of customer service are maintained;
  • Liaising with the chef and monitoring the food offer in the bar.
  • Taking responsibility for pub safety and security, including bringing in security staff  as needed;
  • Overseeing compliance with health and safety regulations at all times in the pub, kitchen and other areas;
  • Organising and advertising events such as live music, comedy nights, quizzes, games nights may involve researching and recruiting talent;
  • Running promotional campaigns to market house products;
  • Collecting and acting on customer feedback to improve the overall running of the venue;
  • Undertaking regular stock checks, placing orders with suppliers and restocking (which involves physical cellar work);
  • Ensuring regular maintenance of the premises, including cleaning and repairs;
  • Recruiting, training and managing staff, including leading meetings to update and motivate staff;
  • Monitoring profitability and performance to ensure sales targets are met or exceeded;
  • Reporting to the brewery manager to assess pub performance and set sales targets;
  • Ensuring that the pub adheres to various legal frameworks;
  • Maintaining relations with members of the local community, the police and licensing authorities.

Essential skills knowledge and experience are;

  • Experience in pubs and bars in a managerial or senior bar staff capacity - ideally you will hold a personal license
  • An interest in brewing and its history
  • Holding a full driving license
  • Hard working and self-motivated
  • Ability to work flexibly
  • Excellent communication skills with staff and customers.
