Dreadnought build programme has taken a new approach to materials assurance. Materials are required to be assessed in terms of their impact within a submarine operating environment; ensuring risk to personal and environment are as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) from build to in-service, and through to end-of-life disposal.

As our Materials Manager you will play a central role in coordinating BAE Systems, MOD Approving Authorities, Naval Authority and Private Sector Support in the assessment of hazardous substances and restricted materials.

The Materials Manager also plays an important role in the undertaking high priority, short timeframe assessments to meet the build critical path. The Dreadnought Materials Manager is responsible for coordinating Materials Assurance efforts across the Alliance to build an evidence-based argument that demonstrates materials comply with relevant legislation and MOD policy (e.g. REACH, BR1326 and Def Stan 07-247) for Naval Authority certification.

Please note that due to the nature of this role, and the projects involved, this position is open to SOLE UK NATIONALS ONLY.

Responsibilities

As our Materials Manager you will be the Lead for the production of engineering governance and reporting for materials management across the project (e.g. Materials Management Plan and Material Assurance Plan) on behalf of the Dreadnought Deputy Chief Engineer Safety & Environmental (DDCE S&E).

You will also act as the Safety & Environmental lead for activities that provide assurance of material clearance for use as required by Legislation and MOD Policy as well as Materials Transversal Lead - managing the qualification of systems to ensure they have complied with the relevant general technical requirement.

Other responsibilities include:

* Reporting the maturity of materials assurance activities

* Guidance to all stakeholders (MOD & industry) on materials management; developing relationships and collaborating with stakeholders to progress materials assurance activities.

* Chairing Materials Certification Working Group (MCWG) and facilitating Hazardous Materials Committee (HMC)

* To analyse and evaluate technical material assessments; ensuring reports justify the clearance for use statements; and, acting as the Point of Contact for new material management enquiries from across the project and other stakeholders within the Operating Centre and wider MOD.

Essential Qualities and Qualifications for this role:

* Engineering background and experience (Mechanical /Marine, Materials, Civil or Naval Architecture are acceptable)

* Strong stakeholder and communication skills with the ability to influence decisions at all levels Industrial Partners * The ability to draw on evidence provided to form sound and proportionate engineering judgements on technical risk

* Demonstrable experience in delivering to tight timescales * An engineering degree or similar Level 5 qualification in a science subject, alternatively relevant expertise achieved through alternative industrial experience may be considered

* Be a member or a fellow of a recognised engineering institution or equivalent, and accredited by the Engineering Council for professional experience and academic qualifications as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer.

It would be highly advantageous if you have:

* Experience in the design/build of systems within nuclear submarines or surface ships, that may be established from either a military service or a shipbuilding background

* Safety and/or Environmental management experience within a manufacturing/defence programme

* Professional Registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer

* Line Management experience as the role is supported by Private Sector Support

* A recognised qualification in a safety/environmental/materials engineering subject, relevant expertise achieved from other industries may be considered.

* A recognised qualification in an engineering management subject, alternatively relevant expertise achieved from other industry may be considered.
