Our client is currently looking for a Head of Environment to provide technical expertise and environmental leadership, helping deliver the transition to a carbon neutral business.

 

The Role  

Assisting the Carbon Programme Director and Head of Fleet, the successful candidate will be working to ensure that our client is industry leading in the delivery of zero-emission and Ultra Low Emission vehicles.

The postholder will lead on a wide variety of environmental challenges and opportunities, in regards to environmental management systems, competency and training frameworks, and operating procedures. The role oversees that all key themes including carbon reduction, energy efficiency, fuel, water and waste management are effectively managed through stakeholder engagement and appropriate governance structures.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical competence and leadership, and set the strategic direction for all environmental sustainability matters
  • Create and own the environmental plan, providing key targets and creating relevant KPIs
  • Review and assess all forthcoming legislation, policy and regulatory changes
  • Report on carbon and energy matters to ensure compliance with emerging legislative changes, including mandatory SECR and ESOS reporting
  • Provide operational support, leadership and business partnerships on regulatory compliance, ISO 14001 accreditation
  • Be the post holder for all environmental policies and SOPs that effectively make up the Environmental Management System
  • Provide expertise for the procurement and contract management of relevant services, and provide liaison with local authorities, environmental regulators, remediation and other technical specialists as required
  • Lead on environmental investigations working collaboratively with local teams to appropriately close out significant environmental incidents
  • Review environmental competencies and training requirements, and ensure appropriate programmes are delivered as necessary
  • Seek out and evaluate environmental best practice from across industries and incorporate as necessary into EMS
  • Identify and deliver energy and waste saving opportunities
  • Work closely with comms, marketing and commercial teams to drive engagement around environmental sustainability

 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in environmental studies or equivalent level qualification
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IEMA) with chartered status (or working towards/equivalent)
  • Proven experience in an environmental leadership role, managing compliance with UK/EU environmental legislative requirements including ESOS/SECR
  • Proven ability to successfully influence, engage and build advocacy at all levels of the business and across functional areas
  • Resilience and the ability to challenge effectively in a matrix organisation
  • Capable of effectively business partnering a number of internal stakeholders
  • Strong commercial awareness, with political astuteness and judgement, and the ability to navigate within informal structures and across functional lines of responsibility
  • Be results driven, a self-starter and a completer-finisher
  • Solid project management skills combined with high energy to set dynamic pace of delivery
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desirable – experience of public transport or other transport sectors, or experience working within a listed organisation, working to tight deadlines during the annual reporting cycle
  • Desirable – experience of ISO auditing (e.g. 14001, 50001) and/or the use of standard sustainability schemes such as BREEAM, Ceequal and LEED
