You’re up but you’re not ready to go. You go through the same, familiar morning routine you have done for years but not for months.

You leave the house, even in the summer, the rain pours and you take the dreaded 20 minute walk. You try to shelter your laptop whilst trying to hold a takeaway coffee cup and an umbrella at the same time. You feel your shoes soaking up the rain water and you already know, it’s going to be one of those days.

Arriving at the station platform with your prepaid ticket, there are many other people around you and all of them having the same gloomy face. Some sniffle… some cough… and you just know it will be worse when you get onto the compact train. You hear the train horn and suddenly there is a flurry of movement, as everyone tries to get to the door of the train.

You find the safety of a seat, knowing someone cannot sit next to you due to the recent social distancing rules… you were wrong. Someone wearing a medical facemask sits next to you, looking as dull and tired as you. They start sniffling and you attempt to get as close to the train window as possible. You try to think of all the rational reasons for the sniffling – cold, flu or even hay fever. But that one illness keeps going off in your mind… Coronavirus.

 You breathe a sign of relief when you hear your stop is next, so you can exit the congested train and make your way, another 10 minute walk in the rain, to your desk. Now, your day begins;

• Inputting data into your payroll system
• You set up new starters, remove leavers
• Processing statutories, ie. SSP, SMP, SPP, SAP
• Liaising with HMRC
• Processing P45’s, P60’s, P11D’s
• Other general payroll duties
