We have Data Analyst vacancies within our Risk & Intelligence Service (RIS) team. With growing amounts of intelligence and data it’s a very exciting time to join our expanding analytical community.
Job description
Within this role you’ll have access to one of the biggest data platforms in UK government. This will allow you to lead on the exploration of a range of sophisticated data sets using a variety of analytical tools and techniques. You’ll work with teams from RIS, Customer Compliance Group (CCG) and across HMRC, enabling you to be at the forefront of tax fraud, evasion and avoidance. Your analysis will support frontline colleagues across CCG and HMRC to deliver our Compliance strategy.

Our Data Analysts need to have real passion for analysis, an innovative approach, the ability to question risk profiles and enhance analytical products to maximise revenue. You’ll fully exploit new data and technology, to ensure that a wide set of innovative opportunities are explored; evaluating options, impacts, risks and solutions to provide clear problem definitions. You’ll be helping us to identify and predict patterns of behaviour and understand emerging trends.

Responsibilities Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Be comfortable learning to use new tools and large data sets, including taxpayer, government, public and commercially available data.

And proven ability to:

• Use software to manipulate and analyse data. For example, using Excel or other software to merge, analyse and consolidate data using pivot tables, functions and charts.
• Use data analysis effectively to inform decision-making or achieve a business outcome.
• Effectively communicate using verbal, written and presentation skills to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Work with challenging, non-analytical stakeholders to determine the overall scope and requirements of analytical work.
• Manage conflicting demands and priorities and deliver to tight deadlines

Desirable Criteria

• Experience of delivering analytical projects in an analytical or statistics related field.
• Be proficient in the use of analytical software such as R, SAS, SQL, Access, relational databases or other packages to manipulate complex data sets
• Experience of coding in VBA, Python or other languages.

Qualifications
All candidates, including existing Civil Servants, must have at least one of the following:

• A first or second class honours degree (2:2 minimum) in a subject containing formal mathematics and / or statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Computer Science or similar). Candidates may apply in their final year of study whilst they are still awaiting their degree result, however, formal offers will not be made until receipt of confirmation of the degree result.

OR

• A graduate diploma of the Royal Statistical Society.

OR

• Relevant previous experience of delivering analytical projects in an analytical or statistics related field. Candidates will demonstrate their knowledge and experience in delivering analytical projects across their CV /statement of suitability and at their Blended Interview in how they meet this criteria.

For those candidates who do not meet one of the above will not progress to the sift stage of the campaign.
