Chief Digital & Information Group (CDIO) sets the technology direction for HMRC and delivers the high-level design for all IT solutions across the organisation. We are responsible for building and running HMRC IT services along with providing IT change and operational support.

Job description

As part of CDIO, the Customs and International Trade Delivery Group is responsible for the end to end service management and development of over 100 separate services from the generation of Trade Statistics, to the administration of Customs and Excise duties.

As a Developer you will be a key member of the delivery team, collaborating with all associates throughout the full delivery lifecycle to ensure delivery of highest-quality software products.

You will utilise your technical expertise and knowledge to write clean, secure code following a test-driven approach allowing you to meet project deliveries and live support tasks within agreed timelines.

Responsibilities

We are looking for individuals who will:

  • Develop software to meet user needs, follow standard methodology guidelines and help to improve those procedures.
  • Build, test, document and implement OpenRoad solutions in accordance with the Delivery Framework and to team quality standards.
  • Write clean, secure and well-tested code and operate the services they build with the provision of impact analysis/estimates for improvements and changes. Undertake peer reviews as well as advancing and sharing technical knowledge with own team and wider partners
  • Demonstrate a rational and organised approach, taking a logical, analytical approach to problem solving whilst paying close attention to detail.
  • Provide support for live systems, build and maintain the development environments and resolve or advance incidents as appropriate.
  • Develop, test and release coding changes in line with program specifications and test strategies.
  • Build test data, document test results and write documentation to enable effective support of the changes in the live environment.
Essential Criteria:
  • A demonstrable understanding of the Unix/Linux or Windows operating system.
  • A solid grasp of constructing SQL queries.
  • Knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle
  • Able to work as part of a team with a clear delivery focus
  • The ability to recognises the importance of standards and quality procedures.
  • Experience working in a high pace development environment

Recent knowledge/ experience of developing/supporting OpenRoad applications with validated expertise in:

• Windows OS (v 7/10)
• OpenRoad programming language v 4.1
• C programming language
• Ingres (2.6)
• Unix/Linux
• Shell scripting
• SQL 

• Microsoft Word (Mail merge/Macros)
