The Head of Content Design role sits within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Group (CDIO), one of Europe’s largest IT organisations.

Work in the areas of service design, content design, interaction design and graphic design

Collaborate with a wide range of disciplines, stakeholders and colleagues, including policy and process owners, to meet user needs through content and services across end-to-end journeys
Job description
As the Head of Content Design, you will report to the Deputy Director, Product and User-Centred Design.


Responsibilities:

Shape and lead the vision and strategy for the content design profession

Lead and manage the development of HMRC’s content strategy, clarifying and communicating the department's content goals, activities and outcomes to stakeholders and teams

Plan and lead discussions at a senior departmental level, working closely with other senior leaders, policy, legal and communications colleagues to make sure content is appropriate, accurate and consistent across all channels

Influence senior leaders in the department to build their understanding and support of agile content design

Be an active leader in the cross-government content design community, owning strategic relationships with other government departments, including the Government Digital Service

Create opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing across government

Collaborate with the Head of Interaction Design, Head of Service Design and Head of User Research to provide vision and leadership for the overall user-centred design profession

Build a diverse and thriving community, where content designers have the right environment to work effectively

Build content design capability across a range of contexts and channels, including long-form guidance (GOV.UK), interactive content and technical content

Responsibilities As a Head of Content Design, you will need to have relevant proven senior industry experience and be recognised as a digital leader.

You will also need to have extensive essential experience in:

Effectively influencing senior stakeholders of the case for user-centred content design

Engaging and influencing stakeholders to deliver outcomes, and introducing positive change into working practices, teams or organisations

Setting direction – making decisions and evaluating impact, contributing to strategy and aspirations of the department

Providing design leadership, including coaching and mentoring

Leading teams to understand the wider service context of a project or product

Designing and creating digital content that is accessible, usable, and based on user needs; writing complex concepts into simple, plain English and explaining this approach to others

Producing content deliverables (for example, long-form content, content for interactive services, content audits, content strategies or plans, evaluation strategies), with the ability to translate your experience into mentoring and best practice

Working within an agile environment

Excellent planning, organisational and team management skills, with the ability to motivate, lead and develop a large diverse team

Proven track record of working in multi-disciplinary, collaborative environments while maintaining effective performance in complex and challenging circumstances

Experience developing design, content or knowledge management strategies

Desirable skills and expertise

It would be great if you also have:

Experience designing integrated services, across multiple products and channels

Experience working with the Service Manual and/or GOV.UK standards and working practices

Familiarity with guidance approaches in government and/or the GOV.UK design system

Experience building collaboration across diverse organisations
Technical skills
