HMRC runs one of the biggest digital operations in Government, our digital services are at the heart of the tax and benefits services for 45 million individuals and 5 million business customers.

The Chief Digital and Information Officer group (CDIO) has over 4000 people who support HMRC’s IT function and are a key part of our organisation.

This role is within our Digital Forms and Outbound Mail team, part of CDIO Customer Services Group. This is an exciting and challenging role for those looking to manage services and deliver change as HMRC transforms the way we do business with our customers: the department is becoming a multi-channel digital organisation.

We have recently completed an ambitious programme of work bringing document composition activities in house, using Quadient (GMC) Inspire for our document composition and orchestration activities for print and digital transmission. This has been done to give us complete control over all output and enable us to seamlessly move towards a digital future. We are looking to expand the team so this is an ideal opportunity for you to lead in bringing the technical management and live service support in-house for the output service.
 
As Senior IT Engineer in application operations, you will be responsible for running, maintaining and improving the live Quadient (GMC) service within HMRC infrastructure and governance.

Responsibilities • Running, maintaining and improving the Quadient software on all environments (Dev, Test, Preprod & prod), including patching/upgrading, manage backup routines, monitoring and actioning service alerts to ensure we meet uptime SLAs, capacity and performance
• Respond to Live Incidents – investigate, interrogate server logs to provide technical reports, identify solutions working with other key individuals as necessary, arrange testing and deployment applying accurate governance
• Provide standard methodology architectural expertise concerning Quadient infrastructure
• Understand how Quadient interacts with the wider supporting infrastructure and ensure it is stable and in support
• Manage and maintain security, configuration data, artefacts
• Service improvements – identify optimisation opportunities, give guidance and handle them through to delivery
• Collaborate with projects to provide technical feedback and minimise impact on the live service
• Lead and develop a small team to build a live service in-house team
• Building and maintaining relations with suppliers/delivery teams on technical level

Essential Criteria:

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate experience in:
• Sound knowledge - of Quadient (GMC) Inspire software and how it interacts with IT infrastructure
• Broad knowledge - of IT infrastructure and how it interacts such as on-premise solutions (VMWare), cloud hosting, various distributions of Windows and Linux operating systems, SQL databases
• Technical specialism and understanding - Be able to understand the core technical concepts of the service and apply them, using management system software and tools
• Incident and Problem management - Be able to take ownership to work at pace to diagnose, prioritise, investigate causes and find resolutions. Demonstrable experience in applying the relevant change management tools and processes. Also able to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems
• Asset and configuration management - Understand, handle and maintain secure configuration and accurate information, controlling IT assets and verifying location and state of assets
• Availability and capacity management - Manage service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets
• Continual service improvement - you will be able to identify process optimisation opportunities and lead on/contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions
• Working Together - Mentor and develop a small team to build a live service in-house run team. Collaborating with internal and external suppliers
