The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK's nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK's continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and delivering the most technically complex programmes in Defence. An exciting opportunity for a Submarine Naval Architect in the Naval Authority Group, helping deliver safe, capable and available submarines, both current and future, for operation by the Royal Navy.

You will engage with international partners, including Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and the United States, jointly developing new techniques and understanding in submarine hydro mechanics. This will include opportunities for overseas travel.

The role is involved in the management and direction of the domain critical submarine hydro mechanics research programme, delivering cutting edge developments, new research and supporting new and in-service vessels, in support of wider Defence Nuclear Organisation requirements and objectives.

You will be responsible for the maintenance of a portfolio of naval standards and guidance documentation and their implementation across the entire UK submarine force.

This role is involved in the safety assurance of submarine stability and manoeuvring and control for all in-service and new construction vessels. It provides exposure to all Royal Navy submarines through in-depth independent assessment of stability and verification of manoeuvring and control to support Naval Authority Certification. In doing so, advice, guidance and education will be provided to Platform Authorities, Industry and Societies, and Navy Command. You will also have a key role in developing the in-house submarine computational fluid dynamics capability.

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • Qualified to Level 4 (e.g. HNC) in naval architecture combined with extensive relevant practical experience in submarines hydrostatics or hydrodynamics, OR qualified to Level 6 (e.g. BEng) in Naval Architecture (or other relevant engineering/science) coupled with experience of working in submarines hydrostatics or hydrodynamics or equivalent
  • Competency in the use of Naval Architectural analytical tools (preferably with Paramarine and Artemis experience) and how to apply these to novel concepts

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

  • Qualified to Level 7 (e.g. MEng) in Naval Architecture or equivalent
  • Membership of Professional Institution and CEng status, or working towards it
  • Attended the UCL submarine design course
