HM Revenue & Customer (HMRC) along with Revenue & Customer Digital Technology Service (RCDTS) are embarking on an ambitious and challenging digital transformation programme which results in HMRC becoming one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world. RCDTS

Revenue & Customer Digital Technology Service (RCDTS) was setup in 2015 as a subsidiary of HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Officer Group and has one of the largest customer bases in the world.

This role sits within the business area; Enterprise Platform Services in the Network Services, Performance Team. 

Networks Services support and maintain every aspect of the network including 200+ sites and 1000’s of network devices that make up the HMRC estate.

 

The Role

The role will involve looking end to end across all aspects of our network technologies services and ensuring they are operating at their peak efficiency for all our users’ experiences. It also involves close working relationships with our architecture and Live Services functions to ensure both new and existing services are meeting our organisations expectations. The role contributes network knowledge, expertise and direction to the EPS performance team that is being established. 

This is a highly technical role requiring expertise in multiple technologies and providing technical support to all other areas of networks.

Communicating with all levels, both within the organisation and with third parties, the role requires ongoing assessment of network performance, looking for ways to improve upon the status quo.

 

Working closely with engineering and operations teams, supporting them with technical consultancy in support of complex issues.

  

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a drive to challenge new or existing solutions and a willingness to question current ways of working. The ability to think differently with problem solving challenges is a must with the capacity to challenge suppliers on their standard patterns, ensuring that solutions are specifically fit for HMRC’s purpose.

An excellent understanding of LAN, WAN, VPN and wireless networking is essential, with the ability to actively promote the use of engineering patterns, techniques and standards.

The ideal candidate can lead and support the development of a network technical community, alongside the ability to describe complex technical issues/concepts to audiences of all levels.

 

Requirements (Essential / Desirable)

Expert level in campus and datacentre networking hardware, including wireless devices, wired switches, routers and load-balancers.

  • IPv4 and IPv6 protocol stacks, including translation QoS and traffic optimisation techniques
  • Expert level in campus and Datacentre networking software including: DHCP, DNS and NTP
  • User Authentication (SAML and LDAP) and certificate infrastructure
  • Expert level trouble shooting/monitoring skills in traffic analysis capture and interpretation.
  • Wireshark, NetFlow, SNMP and user analytics sensors.
  • Experience with configuration management tools (e.g. Puppet, Chef or Ansible) in production environments
  • Broad exposure and use of products and technologies from key network vendors:

      Cisco, Aruba, Fortinet, Checkpoint, F5, Forcepoint, Ansible.

  • Overlays, containers micro-segmentation, ACI, VPCs, vNets, scripting and programming.
  • Cloud integration and the use of supporting technologies associated (Direct Connect , ExpressRoute and Peering)
  • Advanced understanding and application of firewall technologies, security best practices and policy enforcement.

 

Essential qualifications

  • Degree educated. Currently certified with the highest of vendor certification(s) in at least two and preferably three of the following i.e. Cisco (CCIE/CCDP), Aruba (ACDX/ACMX), Fortinet (NSE), AWS (CSA), Azure (ASAE) and F5 (Certified Administrator)
  • Should be actively pursuing Coding and Automation Certifications (Python, DevNet, IaC etc)

 

Desirable

  • Broad Understanding of the complexities of a large (50K+users network estate).
  • Project management processes and procedures.
  • Good understanding of virtual environments and cloud technologies.
  • Key routing protocols, mainly BGP and OSPF.
  • Firewalls, VPNs and Cryptography.
  • Software defined networking services and techniques.
  • VoIP and video technologies and how they interact and use the underlying network.
  • Enterprise wide cloud solutions including Azure, and AWS.
  • Programming or coding in Python, Ansible, PowerShell or specific vendor tools.
  • Good understanding how applications or systems intend to utilise the network and how this might influence the network topology or negatively impact network performance for others.
