Connecting Talent to opportunity

Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Expired

Job Description:

Background

HMRC is building a modern tax administration and runs the biggest digital operation in Government, providing digital services for 45 million individuals and 4.9 million business customers. Our digital programme is multi-award winning and the envy of other government organisations.

We are undergoing a major transformation programme, which includes a major investment in digitisation, that will allow customers to do more for themselves online, in real time, on computers, tablets and smartphones. We are establishing a team of outstanding people who will build, run and supervise these new and improved technology services.

These services are primarily delivered by Revenue & Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS), which was set up in 2016 as a subsidiary of HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Officer Group.

The Team

The award-winning Cyber Security Command Centre (CSCC) has been set up to lead and reduce cyber risk to enable HMRC to transform. We offer world class capabilities to protect, detect and respond to cyber threats including opportunistic cyber threats or targeted intrusions. We undertake extensive real time monitoring to defend our networks to benefit HMRC, our customers, Other Government Departments (OGD) and our Business Partners.

The rapid expansion of online digital services increases the threats we face and means we cannot stand still. We have just embarked on an 18-month investment programme which will further improve the services we provide.

We have a key role in protecting our customers and the public fund as our digital agenda grows and more services move online. We are strengthening our cyber security controls in order to guard against the constantly evolving threat of cyber-attacks which are regarded as a tier one threat to National Security, alongside terrorism.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer who can take a lead role in all aspects of the team’s work. The core requirement will be the ability to build scalable, reliable and secure infrastructure although you will also be involved in project work, scripting and management of cloud, on-premise and private network assets.

Whilst you will be part of the CSCC the lack of a Cyber background is not a barrier to recruitment.

Responsibilities

You will:

Ensure services are coordinated, delivered and operated as the need arises;

Work with and support third parties in providing infrastructure services;

Work with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations;

Provide support to the team manager with technology roadmaps, projects and tasks;

Develop technologies and services in your area of responsibility, making sure that they are future-proofed, and that the organisation derives maximum value from the investment;

Manage own portfolio of work in building, running, supporting and maintaining solutions according to departmental policy;

Maintain operational relationships with suppliers, making sure services and products are delivered and aligned to industry best practice and regulatory and contractual requirements.

Essential

You must have knowledge, understanding and experience of:

  • Administration of at least one of the following: Linux Operating Systems, Windows Servers or Cloud (AWS or Azure) within large corporate environments;
  • Automating tasks using for example Ansible, PowerShell or Python;
  • Building and administrating Virtualised Machines and/or containerised software.
Desirable

Ideally you will also have:

  • Knowledge of security and applicable security controls (and be able to demonstrate this);
  • Experience of using collaboration tools like Jira and Confluence;
  • Deployment and maintenance of Security Incident Event Management (SIEM) technologies;
  • A BSc or MSc in a computing or computing related field;
  • Relevant Industry Qualifications e.g. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), with Cloud, SANS, SIEM, or network-based certification especially welcome;
  • Evidence of ongoing continuous professional training; &
  • Membership of Industry bodies, for example the British Computer Society (BCS).

Please note the post requires Security Check (SC) vetting (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/security-vetting-and-clearance). If not already held we will sponsor, although this may take around three months before you can start.

Training is available for the successful candidature and we offer a comprehensive package built around SANS.
