Revenue & Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS) was set up in 2015 as a subsidiary of HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Officer Group and has one of the largest customer bases in the world. The Team

The Customs, Borders & International (CB&I) team, as the names suggests, are at the forefront of the delivery of projects and services enabling effective and efficient handling of UK import and export activity. This is always a busy and complex area where the intense focus on Brexit-related activity has resulted in extensive and exciting opportunities within a high-profile environment.

Role & Responsibilities

As a Senior Solution Architect you will define architectural strategy and be key to assuring services. You will regularly collaborate, engage and seek agreement with Senior partners, providing direction across the technical and non-technical delivery environment. Also, will be proactive in identifying problems and solutions, communicating ideas across a wide audience with varying levels of technical knowledge and understanding and translating customer requirements into design specifications.

Duties will include:

  • Ensure comprehensive and accurate definition of functional & non-functional requirements
  • Map business processes and requirements to detailed end-to-end system processes and application requirements
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, in the development, operation and ongoing improvement of complex, transformational digital services serving millions of users.
  • Work with project teams to guide design and execution teams building solutions to assure alignment with architecture specifications and standards. Resolve architecture and other technical issues. Document and communicate architecturally significant implementation details
  • Provide input to Architectural documentation such as; Service, Solution, Component, Process, Deployment and Operational views. Focusing on the Infrastructure and Non-Functional aspects of the designs
  • Act as the technical authority in prospective, information gathering and scene setting meetings with other government departments, evaluate technical proposals from external suppliers, and make implementation recommendations to senior stakeholders.
  • Assist with building a culture of continuous delivery and improvement, ensuring that key systems are regularly analysed, maintained and improved.
  • Provide mentorship and knowledge transfer to internal team members with the goal of the internal team being self-sufficient in a planned timescale.

Requirements

Essential criteria

  • Must have extensive experience and expertise in Java, SOAP, REST, Microservices based architecture, message queueing protocols and message-brokers
  • Demonstrable evidence of significant experience in building highly scalable microservices on a cloud-based architecture (with Amazon Web Services, AWS)
  • Extensive experience with Non-Functional Requirements - monitoring & alerting, logging, high availability and enhancing performance and scalability of large customer base projects
  • Strong design and implementation experience with SOA, messaging, middleware and UI technologies, user and machine APIs, as well as related networking and security technologies. Product and protocol experience on messaging and SOA technologies
  • Experience of handling and deploying on Cloud based platforms and Sizing environments, working within an agile, multi-disciplinary team environment and ability to deliver iterative design components (including user journeys) to development teams
  • In-depth experience and understanding of the DevOps methodology and its practical implementation at a corporate level

Desirable

  • Experience in transitioning a large Digital service to production
  • Experience of handling large data sets and scaling their handling and storage
  • Expertise in Docker and containerization technologies
  • Experience in leading a technical team and defining / improving service processes and procedures
  • The ability to tailor information appropriately for both business and technical audiences as well as to various roles and levels in the organisation, demonstrating effective engagement and communication skills.
