Revenue & Customer Digital Technology Service (RCDTS) was setup in 2015 as a subsidiary of HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Officer Group and has one of the largest customer bases in the world.

This role sits within the business area; Enterprise Platform Services in the Network Services, Performance Team. 

Networks Services support and maintain every aspect of the network including 200+ sites and 1000’s of network devices that make up the HMRC estate.

 

 

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Network Services Team where you will work across one of the biggest IT estates in Europe.

The role will involve looking end to end across key aspects of our network technologies and services and supporting the position that they are operating at their peak efficiency for all our users.

You will use a combination of exiting and new tooling systems to deliver this capability, along with a willingness to innovate if there are any gaps or challenges.

It involves establishing close working relationships with our Customer Experience, Architecture and Live Services teams to ensure both new and existing services are meeting our organisations performance and capacity expectations.

The role will also work collaboratively with the wider EPS Performance team to ensure Networking domain knowledge is shared and incorporated into their reporting and support structures.

This is a role requires good technical awareness across multiple network domains and systems technologies and the ability to interact with both junior and senior engineers along with senior management. You may be also be required on occasion, to support or perform investigations into ongoing network performance issues that affect the business.

 

Communicating with all levels, both within the organisation and with third parties, the role requires ongoing assessment of network performance looking for ways to improve upon the status quo.

 

The key responsibilities for this position will include:

  • Management of end to end performance and capacity management to support the various network service teams and that there is adequate network capacity to meet our required levels of service.
  • Identifying, with the Service Manager / Business Areas, capacity requirements through discussions with the business users.
  • Understanding the current usage of the network infrastructure and the maximum capacity of each component.
  • Define capacity and performance trend analysis for key services and that historic and future trends are used to drive expansion or upgrades of the required services.
  • Support demand impacting activities to ensure any future capacity requirements based on business plans, usage trends, sizing of new services, projects is captured and documented.
  • Analysis of usage and performance data, supporting the production of regular management reports that include current usage of resources, trends and forecast.

Requirements and knowledge

  • Understanding of campus and datacentre networking hardware, including wireless devices, wired switches, routers and load-balancer, DHCP and DNS.
  • Understanding of IPv4 and IPv6 protocol stacks, including address translation, QoS and traffic optimisation techniques.
  • Broad exposure and use of products and technologies from key network vendors e.g. Cisco, HPE, Aruba, Fortinet, F5, Forcepoint, Ansible.
  • Cloud integration and the use of supporting technologies associated e.g. Direct Connect, ExpressRoute and Peering.
  • Understanding and application of firewall technologies, security best practices and policy enforcement.
  • Troubleshooting/monitoring skills in traffic analysis capture and interpretation.
  • Experience or exposure to capacity management, specifically networks and infrastructure, including any toolsets – g. BMC toolset, Spectrum, Splunk, SCOM.
  • A sound understanding of ITIL methodology / service management best practices
  • Excellent communication and persuasion skills – and ability to build successful relationships across a wide range of IT teams and senior management
  • Ability to work under pressure / in a pressurised environment
  • Ability to own, address and resolve problems
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  • An understanding of routing protocols, mainly BGP and OSPF
  • Firewalls, VPNs and Cryptography
  • VoIP and video technologies and how they interact and use the underlying network.
  • Software defined networking services and techniques.
  • Programming or coding in Python, Ansible, PowerShell or specific vendor tools.

 

 

 

 

Desirable

  • Broad understanding of the complexities of a large network estate
  • Good understanding how applications or systems intend to utilise the network and how this might influence the network topology or negatively impact network performance for others.
  • Coding and Automation Certifications (Python, DevNet, IaC etc) or Experience with configuration management tools (e.g. Puppet, Chef or Ansible) in production environments
  • Good understanding of virtual environments and cloud technologies.
  • Enterprise wide cloud solutions including Azure, and AWS.

 

Essential qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent educated.
  • Currently certified with network/cloud vendor certification(s) or willing to attain them within an accelerated time period while within the role.
