Job description

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) have a rare opportunity to join their team at the MOD Boscombe Down site, as the Aerodrome Operator (AO).

MoD Boscombe Down (BDN) is one of 16 DE&S establishments supporting the Long-Term Partnering Agreement contract (LTPA) with QinetiQ Ltd (QQ). The management and operation of the LTPA sites is contracted to QQ, but there are certain responsibilities that are non-contract and remain with the MoD Head of Establishment (HoE). One of the most complex of these responsibilities in the LTPA is operating the Government Aerodrome at BDN.

The AO role is diverse, complex and highly specialised, especially at BDN, one of the MOD's busiest aerodromes and hosts the most diverse range of aircraft types, operators and regulatory frameworks in UK Defence.

You will be tasked with running the Air Traffic Control (ATC), station Operations and station Flight Safety organisations, which means being directly responsible for a team of 44 RAF specialist personnel. You will be responsible for this team's management, performance and welfare and for providing them with leadership and support.

You will be part of the Trials, Evaluation Services and Targets (TEST) Project Team, within the Weapons Operating Centre of DE&S. TEST is the MoD's delivery agent for the LTPA with QQ to provide defence Test and Evaluation capability under a 25-year contract up to 2028.

Working to the Chief Engineer (the HoE), you will be part of a team of professionals that is tasked with overseeing and assuring the safe and compliant delivery of the largest and most diverse estate in DE&S, which supports Defence Test and Evaluation outputs for Maritime, Land and Air platforms and weapons systems at sites across the UK. Working in partnership with QQ, your team will deliver BDN aerodrome's Safe Operating Environment that enables Air Test and Evaluation, the Empire Test Pilot's School and the other resident operators to achieve their outputs.

Responsibilities

In the AO role your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to -

* Management of an MOD aerodrome environment to support the safe operation of Air Systems.

* Ensuring that aerodrome management and operations activity is fully integrated into all relevant Air Safety Management Systems (ASMS).

* Developing and maintaining a Defence Aerodrome Manual (DAM) and Defence Aerodrome Assurance Framework (DAAF) for their areas of responsibility (AoR).

* Identifying and monitoring any decision, activity or change in circumstances that results in a hazard or change to the aerodrome or its facilities.

* Managing the liaison with and connect to stakeholders including customers, suppliers and internal teams on specific issues and implement solutions that maximise platform availability for minimum through-life cost, through collaboration with technical and engineering colleagues to meet the requirements agreed in the Command Acquisition Support Plan (CASP).

* Managing the implementation of change to requirements in response to cost and time pressures to ensure delivery to the customer meets expectations.

* Managing the agreed governance arrangements for the delivery of the service, aligned with iLog best practice and KPI's.

You will be expected to take the Duty Holders Air Safety Course (DHASC) and the Air Operators course if not already held and in date.

What you will be assessed against To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

* Previous command and / or supervisory experience, within either a flying squadron, Air Operations at a Standard Aerodrome as a minimum, or a Royal Navy / Royal Fleet Auxiliary aviation capable ship.

* Knowledge of aircraft and aerodrome operations and air safety

* Proven ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels, internal and external. It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

* An experienced defence-qualified aircrew or air operations officer.
