Summary

This role sits within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Group (CDIO), specifically in the Delivery Group Enterprise Cloud Services (ECS) team. We are transforming and growing to enhance the HMRC Cloud Centre of Excellence offering, and we are a diverse team of 80+ individuals, creating a dynamic and inclusive working environment whose skills cover Architecture, Development, Service Design, Operation and Governance.

As a Lead Developer within HMRC’s Cloud Centre of Excellence you will be responsible for leading and working within a scrum team analysing, designing, developing, automating and delivering Core Platform Shared Services in HMRC’s Cloud Environment.

Working with the Product Development Lead, you will be hands on with an Engineering background but must also be passionate about mentoring and coaching as it is important to us that this role has people focus.
Job description
This role will suit an individual whose experience spans automated Linux platform delivery in Cloud Environments through to writing playbooks to deliver and configure Applications. You will have broad and deep knowledge of cloud based environments and can take a methodical approach to deliver products with inherent quality.

Although you will be a specialist in a given technology you should expect to build skills across a breadth of knowledge beyond this as part of your personal development in order to match the industry’s own evolution.

You’ll be naturally; a self-starter, apt at working individually or as part of a small team, able to convey technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders and able to own product development through to delivery.

As the Lead you will manage the team but more importantly act as technical specialist and mentor to the developers in your team, working alongside them to deliver technical solutions (this is a hands-on technical role encompassing 70/30 split in favour of technical hands-on work).

You will be required to:
• Develop a suite of Cloud products to complement our existing AWS and Azure Cloud Platform, specifically in the area of OS Image builds and Security and Monitoring products.
• Development of automated delivery via Ansible and Terraform for a variety of Commercial Applications such as McAfee ePO, Splunk, ELK, Hashicorp Vault and Opsview, RedHat and Windows.
• Ensure Service, Security, Commercial and Operational design aspects are incorporated from the beginning of the delivery process
• Adopt an Agile approach to delivery where new services or service improvements are delivered collaboratively and incrementally to realise business value at the earliest opportunity.
• Mentor and coach reporting teach members and have a focus on continuous improvement

Dependant upon your skills and experience, it is possible to be offered higher than the bottom of the salary band.

Responsibilities Essential Criteria:
• Programming Experience in one or more of the following - Ansible, Terraform and/or Python
• Platform Experience – AWS, Azure, Red Hat Linux, Windows Server
• Broad knowledge of either AWS or Azure Products
• A solid understanding of Cloud technology and concepts
• A good understanding of Agile and its application to platform development
• Applied skills of CI/CD using Gitlab and Jenkins

Desirable Criteria:
• Experience in managing a team of engineers/developers
• Recognised AWS or Azure Certifications
• Experience of managing a patching and image updating strategy through CI/CD tooling
• Experience in one or more of the following – Splunk, Hashicorp Vault, ELK.
