Customs and Border Design Directorate

This is a high-profile Directorate within HMRC and you will have a critical part to play in ensuring the success of our future Safety and Security declarations policy development and delivery. Safety and Security declarations are part of the overall customs process and as part of the team you will have an opportunity to be exposed to ministerial engagement, briefing senior leaders across Government, developing strategy, analysis, and more - making the role stretching, engaging, and exciting.

This post is full time however applicants who wish to work alternative working patterns are welcome to apply. The preferred working pattern may or may not be available, agreement will be subject to business need, and any request to work an alternative working pattern should be made prior to your acceptance of the provisional offer.

The Role
You will be supporting policy development while working to meet Ministerial steers and international obligations. This role provides an opportunity to get involved in crucial policy-making in an evolving area during a lively and exciting time.

Suitable candidates will be those that thrive in a fast-paced environment and can lead from the front - exemplifying strong influencing and engagement skills, working across government bring together different colleagues and ideas. A creative problem solver, you will be adept at finding innovative solutions while keeping in mind the bigger picture.

The civil service policy profession is central to the work of government; helping to tackle problems and identifying and implementing new insights.

This is a role in the Safety and Security declarations policy team where you will be helping to craft our future policy supporting our ambition of having the world's most effective border that builds prosperity and improves security for a global United Kingdom.

Responsibilities You do not need experience of customs policy. What is more significant, is the ability to learn quickly and take ownership of your policy area quickly.

We are looking for a candidate with: -

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills,

- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to tailor products to a range of audiences, including communicating complex messages succinctly and clearly to senior audiences.

- An ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond to rapidly shifting timeframes.

- Excellent decision making and judgement skills, being able to synthesise complex issues optimally and at pace.

- Outstanding organisational skills and ability to work independently and flexibly in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

- An ability to influence others, encouraging strong working relationships with colleagues who have different objectives or priorities.

- An ability to take ownership of their own personal development and who can develop, lead, support and stretch themselves and others to deliver agreed goals and objectives to pace and to a high standard.

Essential Criteria:

- Good organisational skills and experience managing projects to completion in a structured manner

- Outstanding communication skills and ability to tailor both verbal and written products to a range of audiences, including communicating complex messages succinctly and clearly to senior audiences and partners.

- Ability to build and maintain effective and encouraging partner relationships

Desirable Criteria:

- Experience of working in policy-making or a regulated policy area.
