We have Data Analyst vacancies within our RIS Strategic Risking Rapid Capability Development (RCD) team and within our RIS Data Analytics Team (DAT). With growing amounts of data and new technology, it is a very exciting time to join our fast-growing analytical community.

Working as a data analyst in RCD, you will use data and the latest technology to explore new solutions, improving our ability to tackle complex compliance problems. The analysis that you deliver provides insight that helps HMRC to develop new and innovative compliance solutions in line with our strategic drivers.

DAT provides a range of analytical products, expertise and solutions to customers and stakeholders across lots of HMRC business areas.

We interrogate large volumes of complex HMRC, external and web-based data to understand it, and then we identify trends, behavioural patterns and risk populations.

Please note this vacancy is split between 10 posts in RIS Strategic Risking (Manchester & Liverpool) and 9 posts in RIS Analysis (Manchester, Newcastle & Liverpool) Job description Using numerous cutting-edge tools and the latest technology, you will be at the forefront of tackling tax fraud, evasion and avoidance. You will help us to predict patterns of behaviour, identify surfacing trends and expand the boundaries of what can be achieved using data.

This role will enable you to lead on the exploration and exploitation of a medley of complex data-sets, using a variety of analytical tools and techniques to understand them.

You will ensure that a wide set of innovative opportunities are explored; evaluating options, impacts, risks and solutions to provide outputs in line with clear problem definitions, fully utilising and exploiting the latest data and analytical technology.

Responsibilities Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading on the development of complex and high-profile analytical products.
• Dealing with conflicting demands and priorities.
• Working with challenging stakeholders to effectively identify and clarify the overall scope and requirements of the analytical work.
• Manipulating multiple data-sets to analyse data.
• Identifying and sharing best practice.
• Ensuring products meet our quality standards.
• Effectively communicating your analysis, influencing both technical and non-technical stakeholders and management.
• Providing regular progress updates on your analysis, keeping people informed.

Essential Criteria

• Be able to use tools and software such as R, Python, Matlab, SAS or equivalent to manipulate and analyse data. Please specify which tools you have experience of in your application.
• Be comfortable learning to use new tools and large data-sets, including taxpayer, government, public and commercially available data.
• Be able to effectively communicate using verbal, presentation and written skills to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Have excellent organisation and prioritisation skills to lead and deal with conflicting demands. Qualifications All candidates must have at least one of the following types of numerical qualifications:

• A first or second-class honours degree or higher (2:2 minimum) in a subject containing formal mathematics and / or statistical training, for example, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Computer Science or similar.

Candidates must supply further information about their first or second-class honours degree where the subject does not immediately relate to a formal mathematics field. This should include the course modules completed so the mathematical content can be assessed against the essential criteria set above.

Candidates may apply in their final year of study whilst they are still awaiting their degree result, however, job offers will not be made until we receive confirmation of your degree result.

• A Royal Statistical Society graduate diploma.

Or, for those candidates without the relevant numerical qualification:

• Substantial previous experience of working in an analytical role where the skills you have developed can be transferred to this Data Analyst role.

All candidates who do not hold a numerical degree or equivalent must provide clear evidence of their knowledge and experience of using software packages and tools to analyse and manage data at the same level as a foundation degree / HND (Level 5) within their personal statement.
