Summary This role will sit within a new team in HMRC working on the design and delivery of interactive guidance. You will work with other designers and user researchers to help define what will be built.

You will have a love of the web and its possibilities, a passion for design and its history and good familiarity on how form and function work together. You will proactively seek new knowledge on improving your craft as a designer and welcome constructive criticism of your work. You’ll also be part of our active and supportive design community.

Please contact us to request accommodation. Job description The Guidance Team is part of Tax Administration Directorate (TAD) within Customer Strategy & Tax Design. We are responsible for the transformation, creation and maintenance of guidance on Post, Work Management Items, Webchat and Telephony used by 23,000 front line colleagues in Customer Service Group (CSG) to deal with contact from HMRC’s customers.

As an interaction designer you will:

• Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver user-focused and successful interactive guidance.
• Gain a deep understanding of a service area’s user needs and how to meet them.
• Observe user research and help analyse the results.
• Develop and iterate design based on user feedback.
• Produce design concepts, often working to very tight deadlines, and work with other designers to implement those concepts.
• Facilitate a consistent user experience, including designing reusable elements of a digital service.
• Build collaborative relationships with colleagues (e.g. user researchers and business analysts) and external providers.
• Deliver high quality finished designs that meet web standards and GDS/GOV.UK design principles, ensuring that accessibility is built into designs from the beginning.
• Proactively seek new areas of learning, looking to continually improve by gaining feedback from your peers and partners.

Responsibilities Essential Criteria

The preferred candidate will demonstrate:

• Comfortable talking about, and advocate for user-centred design in a way that other people understand.
• An ability to collaborate with partners and team members, and to respond to creative direction.
• Experience of interface design.
• Good layout skills, including ability to design for accessibility.
• Knowledge working with pattern libraries and/or style guidelines.
• Experience of sketching and prototyping, including in-browser prototyping and an understanding of HTML and CSS.
• Experience in researching design with users.
• Experience of journey mapping and an awareness of how to analyse pain points within services.
• A good understanding of web technologies and how they affect design.
• Excellent communication skills to be able to explain design decisions clearly.

Desirable Criteria

It would be phenomenal if you also have:
• A degree in design or equivalent qualification.
• Knowledge of the Government Design Service (GDS) service manual and design standards.
• Experience of working with a cross-functional or multi-disciplinary team. Technical skills

    Selection process details This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Experience and Technical skills. At the start of the application process, you will be asked to submit the following:
