Our client is currently on the search for a committed, patient and self-motivated school nurse to join their outstanding team based in Abingdon 

The Nurse’s key responsibility is to provide a clinically effective, high-quality service of nursing care to pupils alongside first aid care to all members of the school community. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the post holder will also be responsible for the strategic development of school nursing provision in line with recommended best practice guidelines from the RCN. 

Main Duties include; 

  • Adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and other NMC advisory papers.
  • Using evidence-based practice to develop and maintain high-quality nursing care for the pupils.
  • Ensuring that a code of confidentiality is developed and adhered to.
  • Understanding the school’s Catholic ethos and being prepared to work within it.
  • Ensuring care plans are developed and written for pupils requiring them.
  • Providing first aid and emergency care treatment as necessary, including maintaining a stock of all school first aid kits.
  • Following good practice and specific directives on immunisation procedures relevant to the school population and individuals.
  • Operating procedures for control of infectious diseases.
  • Awareness of recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
  • Maintaining medical records accurately, confidentially and safely.
  • Keeping records of reported incidents.
  • Liaising with Social Services where appropriate.
  • Taking part in the delivery of PSHE to support teaching staff as appropriate.
  • Teaching first aid as appropriate.
  • To review and evaluate the service. 

Candidate Skills & Experience;

  • Professional nursing qualification: a registered nurse on part 8 or 15 of the NMC register with relevant post-registration experience, or on part 1 and possessing a specialist practitioner school nurse qualification. Knowledge and experience of providing first aid and the care of children with chronic illnesses.
  • An understanding of the development, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people.
  • An awareness of the range of needs of people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the Children’s Act and legislation pertaining to children.
  • Minimum of two years’ post qualification experience.
  • Experience of working with children and young people.
  • Experience of working as part of a team is desirable though not essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills: clear, concise and succinct.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative as required.
  • Good basic IT skills.
  • Resilient, able to cope with the changing demands and pressures of the role.
  • Good organisational skills relating to both the nursing and administrative aspects of the role.
  • Self-motivated to meet objectives and continually strive to improve the nursing service.
  • Committed to ongoing professional development; willingness to attend appropriate training and/or updating.
  • Physical capability to undertake the requirements of the post and use specialist equipment in accordance with health and safety guidelines
  • Patience, tolerance and sensitivity in line with our catholic ethos

This role is term time only 35 weeks of the year Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
