Wealthy and Mid-sized Business Compliance (WMBC) is responsible for the tax affairs of customer groups including the UK’s wealthiest individuals, Mid-sized businesses, public bodies and charities as well as specific tax regimes such as Inheritance Tax and Research and Development tax reliefs.

Our approach is tailored to the risk that is presented by our customers - for those who present the greatest risk, we adopt a more intensive level of scrutiny, looking across all linked entities. We seek to identify wealthy individuals meriting temporary closer scrutiny, monitoring and providing support to get it right. Job description The Senior Case Manager role provides an excellent opportunity for you to be involved in high profile and in-depth cases.

With clear leadership you will engage with a wide range of colleagues at all grades, using your strong communication skills to establish facts and gather evidence and conduct compliance interventions. Along with a deep understanding of the tax affairs of your customer base and utilising your tax professional knowledge to identify risks, you will promote good compliance, and both prevent and respond to non-compliance.

By regularly addressing customers both verbally and in writing on tax technical matters, you will continuously be putting your knowledge into practice. The team has built successful working partnerships with colleagues across Customer Compliance Group (CCG), including in Counter-Avoidance, the WMBC Complex Evasion Programme and Fraud Investigation Service.

Responsibilities As a Senior Case Manager, you will play a role in the way we operate across the whole business area. You will do this by:

• Leading a team-based approach to compliance activity in a confident, engaging and inspiring manner.

• Develop a high level of tax technical knowledge across key Personal Tax regimes and apply this knowledge to identify and tackle compliance risk.

• Accurately, clearly and confidently conveying HMRC’s position, verbally and in writing, on tax technical matters. Conduct investigations efficiently, legally and proportionately in line with HMRC’s Compliance Professional Standards and ensure all decisions are taken in line with guidance / governance protocols.

• Developing and utilise investigation skills to a high standard to progress compliance interventions, including exchange of information requests and information powers, ensuring that decisions can be defended on legal challenge.

• Preparing, to a high standard, submissions to technical specialists, policy owners and solicitors on contentious issues.

Essential Criteria

You are required to demonstrate experience of the following within your application:

• Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.

• Self-motivated and highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver to tight timelines with minimal direction.

• Have a proven understanding across all main areas of Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, including anti-avoidance provisions.

The following are additional essential required qualifications:

• Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualification, or
• Chartered Accountant (ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA) qualification, or
• Successfully completed the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme, or one of its predecessors (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2), or
• Be a qualified solicitor with post qualification experience in income or capital gains tax

Desirable Criteria

• Experience of working with high net worth clients in respect of their personal tax, including offshore/international tax, and knowledge of how tax interacts with planning of their wider affairs.

• Experience of resolving complex direct tax interventions.

• Knowledge/experience relating to Owner Managed Businesses/corporates, family trusts, family offices.

• Candidates should bring private sector insight, to help us to identify new/emerging areas of tax risk. Qualifications The following are additional essential required qualifications:
