This unique opportunity is for an experienced Architect to work within the Enterprise Architecture team of HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Group (CDIO) as the Lead Enterprise Infrastructure Architect. The Lead Enterprise Infrastructure Architect will play a key role in setting the directions for HMRC’s IT Infrastructure and planning the infrastructure landscape. Job description A Lead Enterprise Architect is one of the senior leadership roles in the Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) profession, working across HMRC at a strategic level to translate the business strategy into business change and technical delivery.

You will be responsible for designing, developing and ever-greening the Infrastructure Architecture directions and governing a portfolio of solution architectures and high-level designs against these directions.

You will have the opportunity to bring together, develop and manage a team of Enterprise Architects to promote consistent infrastructure architecture across a multi-billion-pound portfolio of business transformation projects, including cross-government projects within HMRC.

In addition, the role will also create, maintain and evolve infrastructure roadmaps that will drive the adoption of modern technology, whilst pushing HMRC’s sophisticated IT estate towards a smaller set of strategic platforms.

As the successful candidate, you will lead a team of Enterprise Architects responsible for working across HMRC, helping the transformation programmes in defining and promoting the digital agenda in line with HMRC 'Digital by Default' strategy. You will additionally provide active internal consultancy in infrastructure architecture, driving adoption of our Enterprise Architecture vision, strategies and directions.

The role holder will be expected to engage at a strategic level, influencing policy, and setting direction for technical and business change. They will also play a pivotal role in ensuring that HMRC develops and maintains a strong Architecture capability through coaching, mentoring and training.

Responsibilities We are looking for an Enterprise Architect passionate about infrastructure architecture and well experienced in all aspects of infrastructure architecture, gained through working across a sizeable IT landscape.

Essential Experience:

• A broad IT and Enterprise Architecture (EA) background, with experience in architecting enterprise scale IT or architecture roles where you will have gained experience of large-scale infrastructure deployment.

• Development and ownership of EA strategies and infrastructure roadmaps from a business and technology perspective, including ‘as-is’, ‘to-be’ and transitional states.

• The ability to develop, document and establish architectural principles, policies, standards and reference architectures.

• Experience in assuring technology decisions are aligned to EA strategy.

• Experience of developing large scale Public Cloud based Infrastructure Architectures (IaaS, PaaS SaaS either Hybrid or 100% cloud based) that support and deliver both short term and long term aims across the full range of infrastructure domains to include experience in dealing with major UK based public cloud providers, (e.g. Amazon Web Services, Azure and others).

• Demonstrable experience of driving and delivering technological change against a background of organisational transformation.

• A breadth of understanding of large-scale UK based Cloud infrastructure technologies, with specific specialism in the following technologies:

a) Secure Public Cloud Computing capabilities (Amazon Web Services and Azure) and their appropriate uses, including Cloud based Security Controls; Knowledge of Big Data, Analytics and Risking solutions; workflow and content management is desirable.

b) Tiered Cloud server architectures; distributed high availability server configurations using elastic capabilities to support scaling up and down to meet business demands. Knowledge of containerisation, micro-services and cloud-based database and storage technologies.

c) Knowledge of Software Defined Networking concepts used within the major UK based Public Cloud provider environments, particularly connectivity between physically and commercially separate Cloud environments.

• Experience of engaging at a strategic level and playing a key role in setting organisational objectives, influencing policy and leading on technical and business change.

• Proven experience in developing Technical Capability within an organisation. Including empowering, supporting and developing staff to achieve the highest performance standards.

Desirable Criteria:

• Understand and contribute into discussions about commercial contracts, procurement and sourcing strategies.

• TOGAF certified, AWS, Microsoft cloud certifications.

• Have experience of using and promoting Enterprise Architecture tools such as Abacus, etc.

• Awareness of Service Management and ITIL, ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 27001 Information Security Management.
