Revenue & Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS) are working alongside HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and embarking on an ambitious and challenging digital transformation programme which will result in HMRC becoming one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world.

The Engineering Team/Infrastructure Engineer Role 

This exciting opportunity sits within the Engineering Team which is part of Mobility & Workplace Services which delivers the End User Devices and Services for the whole of HMRC.  The Engineering Team are responsible for the delivery and management of the cloud hosted infrastructure platforms and services which support and secure the End User devices. Our goal is to deliver reliable, secure and supportable solutions. We are creating service platforms on Azure and AWS. Your role will be at the forefront of this strategy, implementing, managing, monitoring and supporting server platforms, integration and payloads. 

Responsibilities 

As an Infrastructure Engineer within MWPS you will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced Agile environment helping to deliver new products and solutions which underpin HMRC’s digital strategy to operate as a ‘Digital by Default’ organisation.   

 

Requirements 

Maintain a high degree of visibility within the Engineering Team through attendance at team and project meetings. 

Enable successful implementation of new platforms and capabilities by ensuring operational readiness. 

Work closely with key stakeholders to ensure services are delivered in accordance with agreed service levels. 

Have a detailed understanding of the technologies used to deliver the platfroms and services within your portfolio. 

Problem-solving and the skill to analyse issues and advise on possible solutions. 

Good all-round communication. 

 

 

Essential criteria 

 

Core and current knowledge and experience of implementing and managing Microsoft Windows Server Operating systems as a service delivery platform in an ITIL conformat setting 

Linux/Unix Knowledge & Experience 

Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server including current and legacy versions 

Experience of server virtualisation 

Experience & knowledge in the administration of Active Directory, including the management of infrastructure objects and federation services 

Good experience or knowledge of Terraform 

Experience of monitoring and management of server based infrastructure, ideally using OpsView 

Experience of attending project meetings from a technical point of view, and able to confidently present evidence based points of view regarding server infrastructure  

SC clearance 

 

Perform out-of-hours support, scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours 

 

Desirable 

The ideal candidate, in addition to meeting the essential crioteria, will also have a broad infrastructure based background to include some of the following: 

Understanding of legacy/on premise infrastructure and applications and the key aspects of transformation to cloud 

 

Ideally the post holder would have some exposure to cloud environments such as Azure and AWS, and implementing and managing platforms in those environments 

 

Exposure to EMS/InTune and End User Device management technilogy 

 

Exposure to O365 apps such as PowerBi, PowerApps and Flow

HMRC’s Technology Sourcing Programme 

HMRC faces a number of contract expiries combined with the need to re-balance control over its digital and technology capability to ensure HMRC can respond quickly and effectively to changing requirements and priorities. 

This is a multi-year programme to transform how HMRC delivers and uses IT. The programme is in place to design and deliver the safe disaggregation, exit and transition of HMRC’s major IT contracts and stand-up new arrangements to deliver both IT run and change activity. 

The programme will develop and implement a new technology supply chain model, protect live services, enable the department to remediate and prevent technical debt, reduce risk in our IT estate, improve cost effectiveness, provide flexibility and establish partnerships with suppliers to deliver innovation. 

A reserve list may be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.
