Control Systems Design Team Leader


Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced control system engineering professional to lead the control system design team in this effort. The role requires technical leadership: to support the team to identify solutions and to guide them through concept, implementation and verification stages. You will work closely with our project teams to develop delivery plans and report status against the plan.

The control system design team is at the centre of our product development effort. We act as a cross-functional hub, bringing together different disciplines (mechanical, hydraulic, software, integration) and apply Systems Engineering thinking to solve problems.

Our first task on any project is to understand the system that must be controlled, how it works (and how it fails). From there we develop product requirements and prototype solutions. Through an iterative process we refine the solutions and take them through to production. You will lead the team through this activity and ensure that the end product is fit for purpose.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a varied role with both technical and management responsibilities, in a very fast-moving company. Unlike similar positions in other firms, this role offers a lot of autonomy - you will have full ownership of challenging problems, leading the team to create solutions that move us towards our goal.

Personal Specification:


  1. Batchelor's degree in engineering, computer science, maths or physics
  2. Proven experience developing real-time embedded applications
  3. Experience of managing/leading a team of engineers in the development of control systems
  4. Expert knowledge of system requirements analysis, system architecture and developing associated verification criteria.
  5. Understanding of model-based software development with MATLAB / Simulink
  6. Working knowledge of software development processes, workflows, and standards e.g. Auto SPICE
  7. Extensive experience in conducting system design failure analysis e.g. DFMEA / HARA
  8. Experience with automotive communication protocols e.g. CAN / CAN FD / UDS
  9. Strong problem-solving skills, with experience of appropriate techniques
  10. Capable of delivering high-level technical presentations to senior management


  1. Ability to work in a dynamic team with changing project requirements and priorities
  2. Line management experience: recruiting, mentoring and developing the team
  3. Experience of applying formal system engineering tools (e.g. Enterprise Architect, Polarion)
  4. Strong background in maths and physics
  5. Practical knowledge of V-cycle and Agile development methodologies
  6. Prior experience of mass-production automotive embedded software projects
  7. Experience of designing control systems for safety-critical systems
  8. Knowledge of automotive diagnostics and emissions controls

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the PTS control system team to develop reliable and secure controls systems
    • Personally lead the technical work activity of the team
    • Review, revise and approve work products created by the team
    • Participate in design reviews, functional safety and FMEA reviews
    • Collaborate with other teams to determine new project needs and find good solutions
    • Present project proposals to company senior management and departments
    • Prepare control system development timing plans and manage the allocation of resources
    • Work with and manage external suppliers
    • Provide ongoing assessment of control system design processes and make changes as needed
  • Develop and grow the skills of the PTS control system team as required by the business
    • Conduct annual performance appraisals and objective settings for team members
    • Recruit new staff as required
    • Actively support the professional development and training of the team members
  • Lead the introduction and adoption of system engineering tools / processes in the company
  • Interface and collaborate with control system team lead and colleagues abroad
  • Support the head of department and in the management of the department
    • Contribute to the management of budgets and resource allocation
    • Contribute in the development and delivery of the departmental strategy
