If so, an opportunity has arisen for a Lead Packaging Technology Engineer to join us at Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S).

This role offers you an exciting opportunity to support the UK Armed Forces, advising on the requirements for packaging to ensure that equipment (non-munitions) is packaged to withstand many years of storage and extremes of handling and transportation. This includes transportation, via a wide range of vehicles across varied terrains, and temporary storage in harsh environments, such that when the end user opens the packaging the item is in the same condition as it left the factory and is fit for purpose.

Responsibilities

As part of a small team, you will work with Industry partners, developing better approaches to Defence Packaging, including making it more sustainable as part of the greening government agenda. Other responsibilities include:

- Providing specialist support, advice and guidance to Delivery Teams and Industry on all aspects of Defence Packaging and, in particular, military level packaging
- Providing specialist support on sustainability and the environment in relation to packaging and packaging materials
- Authoring, promulgating and maintaining advice and guidance across a spectrum of MOD information sources
- Authoring, promulgating and maintaining non-munitions packaging Defence and NATO standards
- Representing the MOD on BSI packaging committees
- Maintaining the Military Packager Approval Scheme to include documentation, Company and Designer certification and audits
- Acting as MOD co-chair of the PEAS (Packaging in Equipment and Acquisition Support) Forum, responsible for the activities of the Forum
- Providing maintenance and provision of Defence Packaging training
- Maintaining regular contact with internal and external stakeholders, including Professional Bodies and other Packaging Trade Associations
- Responsibility for managing and developing other packaging staff

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

* You will hold a minimum of a Level 4 (e.g. HNC) qualification in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline, or will demonstrate the equivalent experience in packaging technology/engineering
* You will have experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful packaging outcomes
* You will have a wide ranging depth and breadth of knowledge associated with packaging technology/engineering

It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

* Experience in industrial packaging
* Experience in the Defence industry
