Chartered Design Manager - Rail

Derby or Manchester based

Flexible approach to remote working

Potential for either contract OR permanent position


£55,000-£65,000/year depending on experience

About the Role
Our client is looking to appoint an individual who is competent working on multi-discipline programmes of work, covering all railway disciplines with a specific focus on Civil & Structural, and a working knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Architecture, Electrification, Plant, Track and general infrastructure interfaces.

This role could be based from either Derby or Manchester, with a flexible approach to remote working.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Management of shared multi-discipline technical resources and allocation to sector projects in line with workload requirements
  • Periodically reviewing and briefing Railway Group and Network Rail standards and implementation to projects as required
  • Monitoring the roll out of new assurance requirements such as Network Rail evolution from GRIP to PACE
  • Develop and deliver suite of training modules to deliver to wider business on Rail assurance protocols
  • Interpreting project scope requirements including Contract Requirements Technical (CRT) and other technical scope documents as required and assessing against all relevant standards
  • Overseeing the central library of standard submission forms and templates such as Forms 001, 002, 003, CAD cells etc.
  • Leading project delivery as CEM or CRE as appropriate; and or vetting and ensuring the allocation of suitably qualified and experienced resource to the relevant CEM and CRE roles per discipline for each project
  • Reviewing, checking, and approving project deliverables prior to issue to ensure compliance with all relevant assurance requirements

Skills & Experience

  • Chartered in their specialist area e.g. CEng IStructE or similar
  • A preference - experience of working in the rail industry for a minimum of 15 years, ideally with a design consultant or potentially a contractor or client
  • Detailed working knowledge of all Railway Group, Network Rail and general technical engineering standards
  • Detailed working knowledge of the GRIP process and understanding of the evolution to PACE
  • Experience of undertaking the CEM and / or CRE role on projects preferred
  • Experience of managing teams of technical resources on complex multi-disciplinary projects
