About the Team

 

The Guidance Team is part of the Tax Administration Directorate (TAD) within Customer Strategy & Tax Design (CSTD). We are responsible for the transformation, creation and maintenance of guidance on Post, Work Management Items, Webchat and Telephony used by 23,000 front line colleagues in Customer Service Group (CSG) to deal with contact from HMRC’s customers.

 

Our engagement index is 76% - amongst the highest in HMRC.

This role will sit within a new team in HMRC working on the design and delivery of interactive guidance. You will work with other designers and user researchers to design inclusive and accessible products that are part of end-to-end services across HMRC and government.

As an Interaction Designer, you’ll determine the best way for users to interact with services, the overall flow and individual design elements. You will have a love of the web and its possibilities, a passion for design and its history and good familiarity on how form and function work together.

 

You will proactively seek new knowledge on improving your craft as a designer and welcome constructive criticism of your work. You’ll also be part of our active and supportive design community, whilst providing hands-on interaction design for interactive guidance products.

 

We all use best practice and standards and expect you to also to help design usable and accessible interactive guidance, that is consistent with the rest of government and HMRC.

 

You will be working with User Researchers to gain a deep understanding of a service area’s user needs and how to meet them. We need someone to collaborate regularly with multidisciplinary teams, facilitating the design process and participating in research activities and workshops. You will take a lead role in communicating design decisions to your team and stakeholders.

 

We value creativity, and want to see you create prototypes and concepts using the government design system and prototyping toolkit that meet user needs. Your prototypes will be used to research ideas with users so that they can be improved based on evidence.

 

 

Essential Criteria

 

• Proven experience in designing accessible interactive digital products or services that meet user needs using a range of methods including: sketching and prototyping at various fidelities, journey mapping and using design systems and pattern libraries.

 

• Good understanding of web technologies and how they affect design, including accessibility.

 

• An awareness of how to analyse pain points within services and communicating and sharing design solutions that fulfil user needs and business outcomes.

 

• Confident in communicating your design decisions and approach to stakeholders of various levels and convincing them that user needs, and a user-centred approach are the right way to design products and services.

 

Desirable Criteria

 

• Knowledge of Agile working and their teams.

 

• Familiar with HMRC and cross-government design communities, both digitally and face-to-face.

 

• Proactively learner always seeking areas of improvement and praise.
