Role Title

Utilities CAD Technician

Role Purpose

  • Establish and Maintain a 3D CAD Utilities Model (Utilities Model) in compliance with relevant specifications to support the Avoidance of Danger of Underground and Overhead Services Safe System of Work.


  • Establish and maintain a 3D CAD Utilities Model (Utilities Model) in compliance with relevant specifications to support the Avoidance of Danger of Underground and Overhead Services Safe System of Work, including:
    • Collect and process all information related to Utilities from Statutory Undertakers records, LMJV, any other relevant Authority or Supply Chain, either historical or new based on recent diversions undertaken.
    • Collect and process site information, including trial holes, as built records, Ground Penetrating Radar & CAT & Genny surveys.
    • Model new diversions planned based on information available in coordination with the Utilities Design Manager.
    • Manipulate and control the Utilities Model to match information from site including clean-up process (removal of unwanted information such as duplicates).
    • Change status of assets - from existing to abandoned and abandoned to removed.


  • Ensure compliance of the Utilities Model with relevant specifications including BBV's CAD & BIM, PAS256 and PAS128;
  • Ensure compliance of site information received to the relevant specifications;
  • Maintain accurate records - drawing registers & schedules;
  • Complete Quality Check Sheets and produce information packages for Handover;
  • Comply with BBV's Quality policies


  • Monitor and mark up progress achieved weekly;
  • Ensure Utilities Model is distributed weekly as a minimum;
  • Contribute to collection of data for Key Performance Indicators, including reasons for difference;

The following qualities/experience are required:


  • Working independently, responsible for initiating and completing tasks and procedures, including where relevant responsibility for supervising or guiding others.
  • The ability to gain, and where relevant apply a range of knowledge, skills and understanding.
  • Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately.
  • Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes.
  • Able to work on own initiative and seek out opportunities in line with level of responsibility.
  • Must be a good team player, with developed communication skills.


  • Relevant Experience in 3D models using Bentley Microstation and AutoCAD platforms.

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Comprehensive understanding of PAS128 (Underground Utility Detection, Verification and Location) and PAS256 (Buried assets. Capturing, recording, maintaining and sharing of location information and data. Code of practice) specifications;
  • Knowledge on HSG47 (Avoiding Danger from Underground Services);
  • Knowledge on Bentley Systems namely ProjectWise;
  • Knowledge on GIS & BIM;
  • Knowledge on FME and coordinate transformation, particularly between HS2 Project Grid and OSGB;
