Mechanical Design Engineer


Job Description:

Mechanical Design Engineer - 6 month contract - Cheltenham/Remote - £43-53 p/h UMB (Inside IR35)

The Umbrella rate quoted above is the Gross Umbrella rate (i.e. the rate we pay to the Umbrella Company inclusive of ALL employment costs). Please note, the rate paid by the Umbrella will be less, as will a Limited Deemed rate or Agency PAYE rate. Please get in touch to discuss the rates via these different payment vehicles.

Clearance Requirements & Eligibility

SC Only No ITAR (start on BPSS)

This role will require you to hold or be eligible to obtain Security Clearance (SC). You will need to obtain a Criminal Record Check and you must be eligible to work in the UK without sponsorship and have lived and worked in the UK for a minimum 5 year period. The Role

Our clients Mechanical Engineering function is responsible for the design, development, test, and documentation of mechanical assemblies for products, which includes new development, change orders, process improvements, and documentation. It supports designs throughout the concept, development and production stages of the system life cycle.
A professional at this grade applies technical / professional knowledge, making independent judgements based on practice and significant previous experience to support decision making. Often seen as a referral point or more senior team member to escalate more complex problems. Roles will act independently with minimal guidance, and may act as project managers/formal mentors for junior staff.


  • Deliver documents/drawings/Supplier Data Requirements List items as agreed by the Lead and Chief Engineer.
  • Deliver documents/drawings as per the agreed budget and schedule.
  • Responsible for identifying customer / internal driven changes outside of the project scope.
  • Flag up change requests to the Lead and Chief Engineer before completing any direct work.
  • Define and prepare specification requirements to ensure products satisfy Safety and Supportability requirements.
  • Support the design and development of products/parts according to the Lead and Chief Engineer requirements.
  • Provide clear concise technical data, analysis and reports as necessary to support project Lead and Chief Engineer requirements.
  • Work with other engineers, Operations and the Supply Chain team to support full integration of solutions.
  • Support the Lead Engineer with the resolution of issues that arise during the design, development and testing processes.
  • Support the Lead Engineer with the delivery of products and solutions to meet project time scales.
  • Applies Design for Manufacture Assembly (DFMA) and Design to Cost (DTC) principles onto the project.
  • Support the Lead Engineer by co-ordinating delivery of technical data and product to ensure solution meets requirements for both quality and performance.
  • Support the Lead Engineer by Identifying and managing technical risks and assumptions.

Expectations, Background and Understanding:

  • Degree or equivalent educated in an engineering or science discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in the aerospace and defence sector.
  • Full understanding of product development lifecycle and associated requirements on product/project delivery.
  • Can manage your own workload, self-starter and experienced in delivering projects working in a team environment.
  • Understands of the importance of the DFMA & Test ethos during product development; 'affordability' and 'lean manufacturing' principles.
  • Capable of providing clear and concise communication and stand-up presentations to Internal and External Customers.
  • Fully conversant and fluent with all MS Office applications and tools.
  • Aerospace quality report written skills a must.
  • Experience and understanding of product development practices in the aerospace and safety critical sectors in accordance with ISO9001 & AS9100 quality standards.
  • Experience of developing products for use in harsh environments or exacting standards.
  • Be able to approach problem solving and analytical tasks in a methodical and logical manner.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably requested.

Functional Specific Duties:

Skilled in Skilled in any of these 3D CAD tools;

  • CATIA V5 CAD and Airbus Rules. (Preferred)
  • PTC Creo 6.
  • Siemens NX 1899

Experience with 3D and 2D data management and configuration control using PLM tools. Experience in all modern machining techniques including advance sheet metal part design to be used in the support aircraft rugged harnessing. Experience in costing of engineering projects and estimating.

Our preference for this work is Catia V5.

You will have ideally, although not essential, had previous experience of civil aircraft hardware design in a dynamic / articulating application on landing gear.
