Job Description:

Senior Software Engineer

A vacancy exists for a Software Engineer to join a team developing a suite of Mission Planning products. CAGE is a Mission Planning tool used by the RAF, Army and Navy Fast Jet and Rotary aircraft communities. It is predominantly a Java Software project developed using the Eclipse IDE. The project is developed using the Agile/Scrum Process using JIRA/ Git. The team are looking for a well rounded and experienced engineer in all aspects of the software lifecycle. Experience of sprint leading would be an advantage but is not essential.


The Software Engineer may be involved in software requirements analysis, software design, software implementation and software testing tasks.

As a Software Engineer you will report to the appropriate Team Leader

Your responsibilities may include:

- Design of technical solutions

- Software development of those solutions

- Testing involved in verifying the above

- Generation and management of requirements

- Estimation of development activities

You may also be required for help in diagnosing problems and to solve internally and customer reported issues

As part of the software team you will be expected to work closely with team members, and support the team and/or project leadership in daily activities

Key Responsibilities

The Software Engineer will be responsible for:

- Completion of allocated requirements, design and implementation, and test tasks to a high standard, and within schedule and estimates

- Testing of completed functionality

- Adherence to project processes and software development practices

- Accurately reporting on progress and providing feedback to team members and leadership

- Supporting System Test and Integration Activities

- Production of appropriate technical documentation

- Participation in peer reviews of own and others' work products

- Configuration of completed work

- Maintaining good change control practices

- Providing guidance to junior team members

Key Qualifications & Experience

The job holder typically requires an honours degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant STEM subject

Additional relevant knowledge, experience and domain expertise may offset the normal qualification requirements

The candidate should be able to demonstrate:

- Good understanding and experience of the full software development lifecycle, from requirements & design through to delivery

- A demonstrable knowledge of software development processes (e.g. design, coding, unit testing), development tools (e.g. UML design tools, code IDEs, source code control, defect reporting systems)

A technical track record in relevant skill areas, which may include;

- Desktop-based applications (Java and Eclipse RCP or C#/C++)

- Web-oriented applications and services (Java/C#, JSP, HTML, CSS, Apache middleware)

- Business intelligence/analytics tools and techniques (ETL, SQL, Python)

- Windows or Linux target environments

- High integrity solutions including Ada development

- Object-oriented design/development including UML

Experience of working to defined and structured engineering lifecycle processes with formal gate reviews and a culture of measurement and continuous improvement
