Power Electronics Senior Engineer


Job Description:

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of delivering high integrity solutions to time, cost and quality requirements in a regulated industry, an ability to solve problems, an in depth practical knowledge and experience of power electronics design within motor drive and power conversion applications, primarily with brushless DC motors, AC:DC and DC:DC. The foreseen development programmes require working experience of power electrical design for machines with supply ranges of 12V to 1,500V, both AC and DC, along with power levels in the 100W to 15kW. Along with power it is advantageous to be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of thermal management, EMI management and magnetic design. Areas of responsibility span from concept development and requirements definition through detailed design, requirements verification and in service specialist electronics support. These projects require the use of simulation and analysis tools, design for reliability, design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and design for manufacture methodologies, as appropriate for civil & military aerospace applications.


  1. Experienced in the design of electronics for motor control and power conversion applications or similar, including knowledge of specifying electronic device parameters and assessment for stress and derating, experience with Cadence schematic capture process or similar, development and verification of aerospace electronics solutions as required. Knowledge and experience of modelling and simulation tools is essential, these could include PSpice, LTSpice, SIMetrix, ModelSim, MATLAB, Plecs and/or SABER.

  1. The candidate will be required to demonstrate knowledge and experience of designing for harsh environmental requirements including, thermal, vibration, EMI and lightning.

  1. Demonstrable experience of successfully delivering rapid concept definitions in early, highly dynamic programme phases to support our commercial team through to formal, rigorous design and analysis documentation to support formal certification of safety critical flight applications.

  1. It is an essential requirement of this role to be commercially aware and to be self-managing.

  1. The ability to generate and communicate clear development strategies is highly desirable. Good communication skills including report writing and project status reporting both written and verbal are essential.

  1. Own accountability for the deliverables of your allocating projects to time, cost and quality requirements, including leading progress reviews with technical team, task management of allocated resources, setting clear expectations, priorities, coaching team members to meet targets etc.

  1. Extensive experience in the use of various laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, voltmeters, signal generators and analysers.

  1. Work alongside the analogue/digital electronics, power electronics, controls and electromagnetics engineers and associated product teams to develop motor control solutions for various products solutions including but not limited to Brushless DC, AC and brushed DC motor controllers and power conversion applications.

  1. Support technical input for internal and customer Design Reviews as required.

  1. Work to aerospace standards such as ARP4754A, DO160, DO254, DO178 and other required standards as applicable.


  1. University degree or equivalent
  2. Relevant experience in Electronic Design
  3. Communications skills- both verbal and written with the ability to generate and communicate clear status reports
  4. Configuration and lifecycle management of designs, from concept through to withdrawal
