About Wealthy and Mid-sized Business Compliance

Wealthy and Mid-sized Business Compliance (WMBC) is responsible for the tax affairs of customer groups including the UK’s wealthiest individuals, Mid-sized businesses, public bodies and charities as well as specific tax regimes such as Inheritance Tax and Research and Development tax reliefs.

In Wealthy, our approach is tailored to the risk that is presented by our customers - for those who present the greatest risk, we adopt a more intensive level of scrutiny, working with colleagues across HMRC to critically review all their linked entities including corporates, trusts and charities. Job description The Senior Case Manager role provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in high profile, complex compliance cases within WMBC Wealthy.

You will be investigating complex structures and transactions that cut across multiple jurisdictions so a good understanding of UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax legislation, including anti-avoidance provisions is essential.

A large part of the role will be providing technical, tactical and strategic advice and direction to colleagues, both within Wealthy and across wider HMRC. These cases may involve offshore elements, owner managed businesses/corporates and trusts.

Within Wealthy, you will provide clear leadership and technical guidance to those that you work with, setting the strategy for interventions and providing effective oversight of the work carried out.

You will also need to be comfortable working at pace with technical specialists, policy owners, HMRC legal professionals and external counsel.

There is an expectation that you will take an active role in the wider activities of Wealthy, for example holding a portfolio role and/or acting as a team single point of contact for a subject area.

You will use a range of tools and techniques to promote good compliance and both prevent and respond to non-compliance from Wealthy customers. Responsibilities • Develop a high level of tax technical knowledge across key Personal Tax regimes and apply this knowledge to identify and tackle compliance risk.

• Interpret tax legislation, case law and guidance and communicate this clearly and accurately to a range of internal and external stakeholders.

• Lead complex compliance interventions efficiently, legally and proportionately; in line with HMRC’s Compliance Professional Standards. Ensure decisions are taken in line with guidance / governance protocols.

• Provide technical, tactical and strategic advice to the team on how to address complex risks.

• Prepare, to a high standard, submissions to technical specialists, policy owners and solicitors on contentious issues.

• Develop and use investigation skills to a high standard to progress your own compliance interventions, and those of the wider team. This will include exchange of information requests and information powers, ensuring that decisions can be defended on legal challenge.

• Be a leader within the team and across your location, promoting the Department’s Respect at Work programme and delivering on our Race Equality Action Plan.

Essential Criteria:

• Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.

• Experience of being a highly effective team member in a complex and challenging environment.

• Excellent evidence-based decision-making skills and confidence in owning and communicating those decisions.

• High level of tax technical knowledge across Personal Tax regimes (Income Tax & Capital Gains Tax), demonstrated through one of the following qualifications.

Qualifications

At least one of the below:

• Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualification.

• Chartered Accountant (ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA) qualification.

• Successfully completed the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme, or one of its predecessors (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2).

• Have recent experience of conducting complex Direct Taxes compliance interventions.

• Be a qualified solicitor with post qualification experience in Direct Taxes (Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Corporation Tax).
