Job Description:

As a Principal Geotechnical Advisor, you will have a great opportunity to work in a national team that is responsible for providing geotechnics policy, standards, assurance and advice in support of the strategic road network. This will allow you to bring your geotechnical knowledge to bear on a major infrastructure asset which stretches across England and includes technically challenging civil engineering works of all scales.

You will have responsibility for leading the geotechnical advice and assurance function within a region. In this role you will manage a small regional team of geotechnical engineers to support the development, renewal and maintenance of National Highways geotechnical assets. You will work with delivery colleagues and suppliers to ensure safe, efficient, sustainable and best value solutions are implemented to meet the needs of our customers.

The Geotechnics Team provides input to national / international standards development, supports industrial research and innovation projects and cross organisation technical groups to facilitate knowledge transfer. Through these activities you will have the opportunity to contribute expertise to generate improvement across the ground engineering industry.

This role will require you to develop collaborative relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders, requiring occasional travel.


What you'll be leading on

  • Provide geotechnical technical assurance to published standards and advice within the South Area/Region, working with Operations and Major Projects Directorates and suppliers. Actively engage with these stakeholders to share best practice and understand their business needs / identify key areas for improvement.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a small team of 2-3 geotechnical engineers, to ensure it has high quality people who are engaged with the team activities and wider business objectives.
  • Act as a source of geotechnical expertise to support the development of asset related policies and operating procedures within the National Highways Asset Management Strategy.
  • Own the development and upkeep of the Geotechnical content within allocated sections of the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges (DMRB) and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW).
  • Support the Departure from Standards process for geotechnical proposals within your region so we can ensure innovative, non-compliant, solutions are appropriately assessed.
  • Responsible for the delivery of allocated geotechnical technical consultancy and research projects within the Innovation Programme, ensuring the effective management of consultants and budgets to achieve best value.
  • Contribute to representation at external technical committees, steering groups, seminars and workshops.

To be successful

  • You will be qualified to Chartered level and be eligible for inclusion, or already included, on the Register of Ground Engineering Professionals (RoGEP) at Adviser level.
  • Proven experience in these technical disciplines:
    • Geotechnical design and construction of both major infrastructure and renewal projects.
    • Geotechnical highway design standards (DMRB, MCHW), including practical application.
    • Geotechnical risk and the management of geotechnical assets.
    • The principles of asset management and development of asset related policy and procedures.
  • Experience of analysing technical information to develop appropriate solutions.
  • Experience of leading and developing small teams to deliver required objectives.
  • Experience of managing stakeholder relationships to achieve desired outcomes
  • Experience of delivering projects using recognised methods to ensure objectives are met.
