There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Prison Custody Officer.  We encourage applications from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, who can demonstrate the integrity, resilience and strong communication skills needed to thrive in this role.  No specific qualifications or relevant experience is required.

The philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate prisoners and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe.

The prisoners in your care will have a variety of different needs and it will be your role to ensure those individuals are treated with dignity and respect and helped to find a new way of life whilst maintaining a safe, secure, stable and decent environment. You will be pivotal in motivating prisoners to change their attitudes and make better life choices going forward.

You will act as a role model to prisoners and provide them with opportunities to rehabilitate and make positive changes to their lives. You will provide prisoners with a structured regime, including access to work, education, exercise and offending behaviour courses. You will be expected to supervise and account for prisoners, ensuring the security of the establishment is maintained at all times.

During your career, there will be opportunities to progress to management and undertake additional training to either undertake additional duties or specialise in areas such as:

  • Incident negotiator
  • Prison Offender Managers
  • Enhanced Gate Security
  • Substance Misuse
  • Induction
  • Safer Custody

Staff also have the opportunity to become instructors, these staff deliver staff training in areas such as:-

  • Control & Restraint
  • First Aid
  • Fire Safety
  • Mental Health Awareness

Your initial training lasts for 9 weeks, where you will receive comprehensive training, which includes Control & Restraint, First Aid, Interpersonal skills and Health & Safety, Security, Prison knowledge
