QBE’s European Operations, which accounts for over 27% of QBE Group turnover, is a leading specialist in London market and European commercial lines business.

We have an opportunity to join our market-leading Marine team as a Portfolio Manager for our Transportation & Logistics book, providing leadership for a small team of underwriters. This market-facing, high profile account has a global territory coverage focusing predominantly on syndicate and lead business. Our product appetite is broad including ports and terminal, cargo handling and freight logistics with the opportunity to develop new products whilst extending further business across different sectors. This role will play an instrumental part in driving and setting the strategy for QBE’s Marine wider product offering, both in London and our overseas offices.

Your responsibilities for this role may include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and deliver the annual business plan for the portfolio. Monitor and report on progress, identify deviations and implement any actions to achieve business objectives.
  • Manage and support the team to ensure that people, resources and processes are aligned with business needs and are fit for purpose.
  • Manage resource, motivate, develop and focus the team to ensure the required standards of performance and support the continuing personal and professional development of team members
  • Initiate new ideas and concepts to support the development and delivery of the business plan in changing market cycles
  • Ensure strategic direction of portfolio is aligned to delivery of broader business objectives.
  • Ensure that the portfolio:
  • Complies with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Adheres to QBE underwriting standards and best practice
  • Meets reporting requirements
  • Enables management of insurance risks
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including customers, brokers, industry bodies, business partners, reinsurers and colleagues, to maximise influence
  • Positively promote the department, division and company as a whole to maximise brand leverage
  • Attend internal and external groups and participate in industry forums and corporate activity to represent QBEs EO interests
  • Keep abreast of market dynamics and demonstrate market cycle awareness to be able to operate effectively and appropriately.

You will need to display you have the following knowledge and experience:

  • International Marine first party Underwriting experience, preferably Ports and Terminals
  • A strategic, customer-facing mindset to assess, design and implement Portfolio business plans in a dynamic market environment and across pricing cycles.
  • Capability to analyse and use data for decision making and demonstrate financial acumen
  • Deep knowledge of the Marine market, with strong client and broker relationships.
  • Previous people management is preferable otherwise a transferable skillset to lead a team
  • Benchmarking systems and tool used to manage Portfolio performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
