Baby boomers are the oldest generation in the workforce today. As you come to the end of your working life, you might be considering looking for a part-time job while you enjoy your retirement, or you might just be on the lookout for new career opportunities. Here are a few job searching tips, if you are a baby boomer.
Take advantage of the fact you have so much to offer
As the more experienced generation in the workforce, you have much more to offer just based on your years of experience and work knowledge. Use this when applying for a new job, write a Cover Letter highlighting your work experience and use your interview as your moment to shine and really highlight your skills.
Age is just a number
Don’t be discouraged about entering a different work environment with younger colleagues.
Most of your younger colleagues will be looking at you as a mentor figure. And you can prove yourself as an asset to the team because of your experience and wisdom.
Don’t be put off applying for jobs
When looking for a new job don’t be put off by job offers that say, ‘this qualification is preferred’. Most of the time, actual work experience in that field can trump a qualification. Still apply for the job and leave it for your interview to convince employers about your worth.
Practice job interviews
It may have been a long time since you were last at a job interview but refreshing your mind on how they work will benefit you. Practice your interview in advance. Note down questions you want to ask the company but also be prepared for the questions they may ask you.
You’re never too overqualified
Through all of your years in the workforce you’ve earned yourself quite a good record. Being overqualified is a myth. Play to your best strengths. Showing how much you can offer the company will only benefit you and them.
Volunteer
If you are nearing retirement and you still want to keep active but you don’t want to compromise to a regular working schedule or you just want to contribute towards a worthy cause, then volunteering is always a great option. It will also keep you in a better mindset because you’re working whilst staying useful and active.
Where to find jobs
If you are a frequent Facebook user, then use Facebook to search for jobs as well. You can simply follow and like companies and job boards Facebook pages to keep up-to-date with jobs they are advertising.
Email alerts are another way to find jobs. Signing up for email alerts allows the job search websites to do the job searching for you. All you have to do is customise what job you are looking for and then from that information, specific jobs are sent to you via email.
Overall, you will be able to find a job without a doubt. Just remember, you are the wisest because of the years of work experience you have.
