MPI is looking for a Permanent Mechanical- Electrical Technician, for our client based in Cranfield.
Permanent role
Salary up to £29k depending on experience
Monday to Friday 37hours per week
Flexible working will be considered
The client is a testing laboratory with over 30 years’ experience of testing structures across a variety of industries. They have been instrumental in formulating legislation for Formula 1 and Coach industries. The facilities include a 25m sled track, rigid wall and deceleration capability, static test bed and a range of drop towers. The structures test include Formula 1 nose cones to FIA legislation, aircraft seats and packaging. The client also measure the moments of inertia of full-scale vehicles for the automotive industry and are approved by the VCA to conduct R66, full scale coach rollovers at own facility.

Main purposes of job
Working as part of the testing team, the role is to meet the demands of testing requirements in a professional and timely manner.
You will be responsible for providing technical support to colleagues on all aspects required to enable to meet customer and legislative requirements, this can include:
- Physically preparing and constructing static and dynamic test rigs for customers.
- Performing mechanical workshop machining tasks, including welding, drilling and marking out of test pieces.
- Performing electrical fittings such as soldering, wiring leads and cabling.
- Developing procedures and tools for mechanical testing, including the operation of existing test machines, instrumentation and photographic equipment.
- Maintenance of existing rigs and tools, to ensure the laboratory is kept tidy and operational.
- Participate in design and use of CAD software, (Solidworks) for new test rigs or adaptions from existing rigs.

BTEC/HNC or A levels or equivalent in science/engineering based subjects
Relevant health and safety
qualification (NEBOSH/IOSH)
Experience
Demonstrable or Comprehensive Engineering Machine workshop experience
Practical knowledge of material testing Soldering and welding techniques
Experience in calibration of instrumentation
Experience of crash testing
Experience of working with ATD’s (Anthropometric Test Dummies)
Knowledge
Solid knowledge in mechanical and electrical engineering, including workshop techniques.
Knowledge of relevant health, safety and environment legislation and its application within testing
A knowledge of general machining practices such as, but not limited to drilling, lathes, mills and welding is required.
A broad background in automotive safety testing (full vehicle, sleds, subsystem and component) to support safety and homologation requirements
A thorough understanding of physical sensors used in crash testing, i.e. Accelerometers/load cells
Knowledge of hydraulics is useful but not essential.
