Job Description:
MPI have a requirement for a Welder and Fabrication Technician to work on site at Stafford.
This is a contract for approx. 6 months with the possibility of an extension
Rate of pay is £14.66 per hour PAYE
This role is in scope of IR35
JOB PURPOSE
The Welder & Fabrication Technician will weld and repair Aircraft Components, fulfil Critical Component repair for Ground Support Equipment and manufacture Special to Type Lifting Tackle for MOD and support any engineering tasking as required by our client.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB
Carry out all tasks to a high professional standard in accordance with approved source information (ASI) and customer requirements.
Provide Subject Matter Expert advice to other members of the organisation for new work and existing work opportunities as required.
Carry out full and comprehensive surveys and compile reports giving full details of capability to complete tasks, materials and quantities required, specialised tooling, spares and consumable items.
Ensure all tasks are carried out in accordance with relevant technical drawings, BS and Defence Standards.
Manufacture of Special to Type Lifting Equipment in accordance with supplied drawings.
Legally responsible and self-certifying for any work carried out daily.
Carry out critical component repair on all types of Aircraft Ground Support Equipment.
Understanding of the Standards required for Aviation engineering such as MAOS1
Ensure all work undertaken is compliant as defined in the Company Business System and with all Statutory COSHH, Health, Safety and Environmental protection instructions.
Ensure all legal and auditable work documents such F700 series, Baan paperwork and Engineering Record Cards are completed correctly.
Ensure before use inspection of machinery as required under PUWER regulations are carried out.
Support other departments within the Company with welding, fabrication and general engineering tasks.
Undertake any specialist and mandatory training including the 6 monthly aviation and 3-yearly critical MAG welding re-qualification tests and ensure qualification is to a required standard in order to carry out duties.
Maintain a tidy workplace with correct tool control.
Certify that tasks are carried out in accordance with work instructions.
Maintain and store correctly and safely materials including metal, spares and POL.
Understand and comply with statutory, quality and organisational requirements for safety, documentation and occupational health and safety.
Understand the importance of Compliance in Aviation Engineering.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Qualifications and experience in Metal Active Gas welding to Critical Standard, Tungsten Inert Gas welding to Aircraft Standard, Manual Metallic Arc welding, Gas cutting & welding and Braising, Use of manual Plasma cutter.
Skilled in the operation and use of all tools, materials and machinery in the Fabrication Bay and thorough knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
Understand, interpret and work from Technical Drawings and instructions.
Ability to use Microsoft Office.
James trained to minimum of Leading Maintainer role and knowledge of Baan and TDOL.
Trained in the use MHE and Overhead Gantry Crane.
Able to work alone on tasks using own experience and skills.
Ability to understand and interpret a wide source of drawings, technical documents and Air Publications and plan work.
INTELLECTUAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Problem solving that can often require complex solutions.
Having to react to customers operational requirements resulting in unplanned work being scheduled with no or minimal notice. At its extreme, this can mean a turnaround time measured in hours rather than days. A large degree of autonomy is placed on the technician to fulfil work in a timely manner, planning it within the overall needs of the team and the business.
Ability to manufacture, repair and modify work utilising skills and experience or from a concept as required.
Ability to design and manufacture Jigs and Fixtures, and manufacture work aids to assist other sections.
COMMUNICATION DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Able to identify customers' needs and provide solutions.
Liaise with Team leader, Customer Services and other work area to meet tasking.
Report any work problems in a timely manner that may impact on welding and fabrication bay capability.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with internal and external contacts by telephone, email and face-to-face.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Manual working with handling of heavy metal and equipment.
PPE required at all times and RPE, headshield and respirator as required.
All operations require long standing periods when welding or operating machinery.
General Bench Fitting; riveting and drilling etc.
Some tasks require considerable dexterity; bending, stretching, twisting, turning.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Workshop based, in a restricted hazardous area.
Metal store is based some distance away from main workshop requiring considerable manual handling of materials.
Lone working normal.
Because of noise, fire and slip hazards work must be carried out in a safe and compliant manner with due care towards oneself and others, this means using various protective equipment including eye, skin, hearing and respiratory protection.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Engineering Craft Apprenticeship or equivalent.
City & Guilds in Welding Craft Practice or equivalent
Proven experience with good overall knowledge and understanding of engineering, fabrication and welding activities.
Must be experienced and competent to pass 6 monthly Aircraft re qualification weld test and 3 yearly Critical MAG weld test through UKAS accredited external bodies, e.g. Zurich Laboratory Services.
