Job Description:
Debt Advice Caseworker (Ex-Offender Support)
Sheffield
Up to £27,500 per year
Full-time, Permanent
About the role
We are recruiting an experienced Debt Advice Caseworker to support people with complex financial situations, including problem debt, benefit issues and financial instability, within probation services, activity hubs and prison settings.
This role is suited to candidates with a background in frontline debt advice or money guidance, for example those who have worked for Citizens Advice, charitable debt advice services, housing associations, local authority welfare teams or similar organisations.
You will work with individuals who often have multiple debts, limited income and challenging personal circumstances. Your focus will be on reviewing financial situations in detail, developing realistic repayment plans, negotiating with creditors and helping people regain control of their finances.
This is not a collections, enforcement or commercial finance role. We are specifically seeking experience in supporting people with problem debt, not recovering debt.
What you will do
- Manage a caseload of individuals within probation services and community settings, providing structured one-to-one debt and money advice.
- Carry out full financial assessments, including income, expenditure and debt reviews.
- Support individuals to prioritise debts and develop affordable repayment plans.
- Liaise directly with creditors, landlords, utility companies and enforcement agencies to negotiate repayments, holds or resolutions.
- Provide guidance on benefits, entitlements and the responsibilities linked to ongoing claims.
- Support individuals to improve budgeting skills and financial stability over time.
- Maintain accurate, timely and compliant case records in line with advice standards.
- Work flexibly across community locations and prison environments where required.
What we are looking for
- Proven experience delivering debt advice or money guidance to people with complex financial needs.
- Background in organisations such as Citizens Advice, debt charities, housing or welfare advice services, or similar support-focused environments.
- Strong understanding of problem debt, budgeting, creditor negotiation and benefit systems.
- Experience supporting marginalised or vulnerable groups, including ex-offenders.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with people in difficult circumstances.
- Confidence managing a caseload, working to targets and maintaining accurate records.
- Willingness to travel and work within prison settings as required.
Due to the nature of this role, you will have access to your own vehicle and you will be required to complete an online Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and enhanced security clearance vetting.
If this sounds like the perfect role for you then please submit your CV.
