HEAD OF SCIENCE
A Head of Science leads the science department to deliver high-quality education, developing curriculum, improving teaching standards, and raising student attainment. Key responsibilities include strategic leadership, staff management, ensuring safety standards (and managing budgets. They foster an engaging learning environment and support student progress across disciplines. Key Responsibilities and Duties:- Strategic Leadership & Management: Set a clear vision for the science department, monitor performance data to drive improvements, and ensure compliance with school policies.
- Curriculum Development & Delivery: Develop and manage a detailed curriculum from Key Stage 3 through 5 (or equivalent), ensuring engaging lessons that foster curiosity.
- Teaching & Learning: Maintain high-quality teaching through coaching, mentoring, and observing colleagues, while providing exemplary teaching themselves.
- Staff & Resource Management: Line manage science teachers and technicians, including conducting appraisals, managing budgets, and overseeing the safety of labs.
- Assessment & Attainment: Monitor student progress, analyze exam data, and implement intervention strategies for student groups (e.g., SEND, disadvantaged) to ensure high achievement.
- Health & Safety: Ensure all health and safety regulations are strictly met, including risk assessments and legal compliance within laboratories.
- Education/Qualification: A degree in a science discipline and qualified teacher status (QTS).
- Experience: Proven record of successful leadership experience and outstanding teaching performance.
- Skills: Exceptional communication, ability to motivate staff, and a strong understanding of curriculum development
