Prototype Technician

Location: Maidenhead 

Hourly Rate: £30 per hour PAYE / £40 per hour umbrella 

We’re working with a well-established manufacturing business who are looking to bring an experienced Prototype Technician into their team. This is a hands-on role, supporting the build and development of low-volume and prototype products across both electro-mechanical and PCB assembly. This position would suit someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and working closely with engineering teams to bring new products to life.

As a Prototype Technician, you’ll be responsible for building and assembling a range of prototype and low-volume products. Duties will include:
  • Electro-mechanical assembly of complex products and sub-assemblies
  • PCB assembly including both through-hole and surface mount soldering
  • Working from engineering drawings, schematics and build instructions
  • Supporting prototype builds, testing and product development activities
  • Fault finding, debugging and reworking assemblies where required
  • Assisting engineers with design improvements and build feedback
  • Wiring, crimping and cable assembly work
  • Carrying out quality checks to ensure builds meet required standards
  • Maintaining a clean, organised and ESD-compliant workspace

To be successful in this Prototype Technician role, you’ll need:

  • Proven experience in a prototype, R&D, or low-volume manufacturing environment
  • Strong electro-mechanical assembly skills
  • Confident PCB assembly experience, including through-hole and surface mount soldering
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics
  • Experience with wiring, looms and cable assemblies
  • Good fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and quality-focused approach
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a wider engineering team

Desirable:

  • IPC certification
  • Experience working within an R&D or development environment
  • Exposure to testing or basic electronics diagnostics
