Job Description:
Are you an experienced Software Manager who enjoys combining hands-on development with technical leadership? Do you have a background in embedded software, control systems and leading engineering teams within a highly regulated environment?
We're working with an innovative engineering manufacturer that develops complex electronic systems used in safety-critical industrial applications. Due to continued growth, they're looking for a Software Manager to lead the software function, shape the technical roadmap, and oversee the successful delivery of software projects from concept through to deployment.
The RoleReporting to the Engineering Manager, you'll lead a small team of Software Engineers while managing external development partners to deliver high-quality software solutions on time and to specification.
This is a varied role where you'll remain technically involved while driving software strategy, supporting new product development, maintaining existing platforms, and ensuring all solutions meet stringent safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities as a Software Manager:- Lead the software team, providing technical direction, mentoring and performance development.
- Develop and maintain embedded software for complex electronic control systems.
- Define the long-term software architecture and technical roadmap.
- Establish coding standards, software development best practice and robust engineering processes.
- Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering through to deployment and commissioning.
- Work closely with Hardware, Product and Engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration.
- Develop intuitive human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and robust control software.
- Maintain and enhance existing software platforms while supporting future product development.
- Investigate and resolve software issues, ensuring safe and reliable solutions for customers.
- Support production, service and manufacturing teams with software-related issues.
- Manage project plans, resources, budgets and delivery milestones.
- Identify technical risks and implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement across software development processes and team capability.
You'll be an experienced technical leader with a passion for delivering robust, high-quality software within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
You'll ideally have:
- A degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Proven experience leading software development teams and delivering complex technical projects.
- Strong embedded software development experience.
- Excellent knowledge of C, C and C#.
- Experience developing software for embedded control systems.
- A solid understanding of software architecture, system integration and HMI development.
- Experience working with Agile or Scrum methodologies.
- Strong requirements capture, documentation and test specification experience.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on technical delivery.
Experience working within safety-critical, industrial automation, electronics manufacturing, instrumentation, power electronics or other regulated engineering environments would be highly advantageous. Knowledge of digital electronics would also be beneficial.
