Job Description:
An established engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic solutions is experiencing continued growth and is looking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer.
Working across a range of industries including automotive, medical, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing, the company delivers innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges. Due to ongoing expansion and a strong order book, this is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a successful and forward-thinking engineering team.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing bespoke automation and special-purpose machinery from initial concept through to customer installation. You will work closely with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and customers to deliver robust, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions.
This role would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for the opportunity to take ownership of projects, develop innovative designs, and be involved throughout the full product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and detail bespoke automated machinery and mechanical systems using 3D CAD.
- Take ownership of allocated projects from concept through design, build, testing, and customer handover.
- Produce accurate engineering drawings, models, and bills of materials.
- Work closely with electrical engineers, production teams, suppliers, and customers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Participate in design reviews to ensure solutions are practical, reliable, cost-effective, and suitable for manufacture.
- Support the build and installation process by providing technical guidance and resolving design issues.
- Liaise with suppliers to source components and achieve project cost and timescale requirements.
- Visit customer sites when required to understand requirements, gather information, and support installations.
- Assist with risk assessments, technical documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve designs, processes, and engineering practices.
- Support troubleshooting activities during development, commissioning, and warranty stages.
About You
The successful candidate will have:
- A Mechanical Engineering qualification (Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent experience).
- Experience working within mechanical design, ideally within automation, special purpose machinery, robotics, or similar engineered environments.
- Strong experience using a 3D CAD package such as SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor, Creo, or similar.
- Experience designing mechanical systems, mechanisms, fabricated components, and assemblies.
- A proven track record of delivering engineering projects from concept through to completion.
- Good understanding of design for manufacture and assembly principles.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Knowledge of machine safety, risk assessments, and CE/UKCA requirements would be advantageous.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.
- A practical, hands-on approach with a problem-solving mindset.
What’s on Offer
- Opportunity to work on innovative automation and robotic engineering projects.
- A varied role with involvement across the full project lifecycle.
- A supportive engineering environment with opportunities for development.
- The chance to work on complex, technically challenging projects across multiple industries.
