Are you passionate about books, literacy and encouraging young people to develop a love of reading?

A secondary school in Chislehurst is looking for an organised, enthusiastic and engaging School Librarian to take responsibility for the day-to-day management and development of its school library.

This is a fantastic permanent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and wants to play an important role in developing reading for pleasure, literacy and independent learning across the school.

The Role

Working closely with the English and Literacy teams, you will manage the school library and help create a welcoming, engaging environment where students are encouraged to read, research and learn independently.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Managing the day-to-day running of the school library
• Cataloguing, processing, shelving and maintaining library stock
• Managing book loans, returns and overdue items
• Supporting students to select appropriate and engaging reading materials
• Supervising students using the library
• Delivering weekly library sessions for KS3 students
• Supporting whole classes using the library
• Promoting reading for pleasure across the school
• Organising competitions, activities, Book Week and other literacy events
• Supporting students with research skills, referencing and digital literacy
• Supporting Sixth Form students with research methods and formal citations
• Managing and monitoring the library budget and resources
• Developing and implementing a library development plan
• Recruiting, training and supporting student librarians
• Supporting literacy interventions, including 1:1 reading
• Working alongside the school’s Literacy Coordinator and English department
• Supporting transition days, open evenings and student inductions

Accelerated Reader

A key part of the position will be supporting the school's Accelerated Reader programme.

You will help facilitate Accelerated Reader lessons, support students with choosing appropriate books and use reading data to help monitor literacy progress.

Full training on Accelerated Reader will be provided, so previous experience of the platform is not essential.

The Ideal Candidate

The school is looking for someone who is:

• Passionate about books, reading and literacy
• Highly organised with strong administrative skills
• Confident working independently and managing a busy library environment
• Comfortable supervising and supporting secondary-aged students
• Able to build positive relationships with students and staff
• Confident using IT and digital resources
• Able to maintain accurate records and manage resources effectively
• Creative and enthusiastic about developing reading initiatives
• Committed to safeguarding and supporting young people

Previous experience within a school, library, education, administration or literacy-focused environment would be highly beneficial.

This could be an excellent opportunity for an experienced School Librarian or someone with transferable library, education or administrative experience looking to develop their career within a secondary school.
