Naval Architect

Expired

Job Description:

An exciting opportunity for experienced Naval Architects to join the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) and help shape the future forces the Royal Navy deploys into the underwater battlefield and exploit technology to improve the current submarine fleet. This advert is inviting applications for two separate requirements.

The first opportunity falls within the Forward Design Group (FDG), looking at concept designs for novel ways to meet Navy requirements. As part of the SDA's FDG, you will explore concepts to meet the Royal Navy's requirements in novel ways, liaising with science and technology community across MOD and industry to help focus technology into practical, cost-effective, battle winning solutions. In addition to manned submarines, the FDG are actively exploring the use of autonomous underwater vehicles and are working with stakeholders to demonstrate their potential. As the Senior Naval Architect in the team, you will lead in whole platform concept design integration and performance assessment, using a range of analytical tools and techniques. This role is responsible for development and assessment of underwater concepts, which boldly combine and apply emerging technology ways that can deliver practical benefits. In addition to the application of "traditional" naval architectural concept design techniques, it will involve liaison with technology developers and customers to explain concepts and shape direction.

The second opportunity, with In-Service Submarines (ISM), is responsible for stability and manoeuvring for the whole Royal Navy submarine flotilla. ISM is looking for an experienced Naval Architect to take on a challenging and exciting role in a dynamic and operationally significant team, contributing to maintaining the Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD) and submarine readiness through Naval Architecture outputs, and ensuring those platforms are of a safe design and material state. Working closely with Navy Command, submarine crew and the wider in-service support enterprise, including industry partners, you will maintain safe operating envelopes, stability statements and other key operational guidance, to enable operations and reduce safety risks. You will have opportunities to conduct hydrodynamic sea trials on-board RN submarines, conduct stability experiments and to plan and execute engineering analysis to improve operational capability and maintain safety margins. This role is responsible for maintaining safety certification for stability and manoeuvring for all in-service submarines. You will brief on technical and safety issues to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leadership and direct to submarine crew.

The responsibilities of the Forward Design Group position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To provide professional Naval Architecture support to the FDG Leader
  • To be responsible for Naval Architecture calculations in support of concept design activities and the associated 3D modelling process and output geometries
  • To be responsible for the generation of Whole Platform (manned and unmanned) architectures, interfaces and dependencies, working with other FDG and AU leads to develop integrated concept solutions
  • To conduct Whole Platform feasibility studies across the full spectrum of underwater activity
  • To derive initial user and system requirements to meet specific use cases

The responsibilities of the In-Service Submarines position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct stability experiments and manoeuvring trials and undertake stability and manoeuvring analysis including running Paramarine and Artemis models
  • Maintain Naval Authority certification in Stability & Manoeuvring and Control and Operational Documents including nomographs, stability statements, SMEs/MLDs, Trim Polygon, etc.
  • Sponsor and deliver design changes to achieve objectives on safety and availability/readiness and review and enable design changes sponsored by other DAs.
  • Leadership of small team of Naval Architects and ownership of delivery of output to achieve key technical, safety and programme goals to support the Navy
  • Technical Leadership on Naval Architecture issues across the enterprise including briefing Navy Command HQ, submarine crews and the Naval Architecture Communities.

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • Level 6 qualification (e.g. BEng), or higher, in Naval Architecture or equivalent
  • Good experience (practitioner/expert level) of maritime design (preferably underwater) and its practical realisation
  • Competency in the use of Naval Architectural analytical tools (preferably with Paramarine, Artemis and Rhino experience)
  • An ability to think logically, blending imagination, technical soundness and practicality against an understanding of the Customer requirement and harsh operational environment

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

  • Master's Engineering Degree in Naval Architecture or equivalent
  • Attendance of UCL submarine design course
  • Membership of Professional Institution and holding (or working towards) CEng status
