We have embarked on a major transformational Programme to redirect more of our people and resources to compliance activities, modernising systems and re-engineering processes to become more customer focused.

Wealthy and Mid-sized Business Compliance (WMBC) is responsible for the tax affairs of customer groups including the UK’s wealthiest individuals, Mid-sized businesses, public bodies and charities as well as specific tax regimes such as Inheritance Tax and Research and Development tax reliefs.

There are approximately 170,000 Mid-sized businesses in the UK, and they are significant in terms of growth potential and entrepreneurial activity. Mid-sized businesses are defined as those that have a turnover between £10 million and £200 million or more than 20 employees. The Mid-sized Business (MSB) team works with these businesses to improve compliance and tackle avoidance and evasion and support growing businesses. We are a high-profile team and a key priority for MSB, we work closely with Large Business colleagues to continuously develop our sector knowledge.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the compliance of some of our most complex customers. We monitor a defined population which means you will see compliance from end to end and be involved in new approaches to compliance. The role is predominantly focussed on compliance activity but as part of this role you will get involved in mentoring colleagues and helping to develop new ways of working to support HMRC’s high level objectives.

As well as a strong technical background you will also need to be a strong communicator adept at negotiation. You will lead at meetings with customers and present cases at governance boards to senior colleagues. There is a strong international element to our customers so any experience in this regard would be an advantage.

You will also have responsibility for a portfolio area which could include: the application of specific legislation to the finance sector, new developments in the sector or new ways of working. Ownership of such a portfolio will mean sharing knowledge with colleagues formally and informally as well as collaborating with a national network.

We are also looking for people who show leadership and who are comfortable challenging the norm.

Responsibilities As a Specialist Corporation Tax Professional, you will play a key role in the way we operate across the entire business area. Within your role you will:
• Lead your own complex compliance checks, being accountable for your decisions.
• Support others as part of a multi-grade team.
• Identify tax risks in Corporation Tax returns through review and analysis of accounts, computations, information systems and other sources.
• Meet yield delivery targets in line with forecasts.

Skills

• Experience of leading on and dealing with complex Corporation Tax matters.
• Strong attention to detail and experience of analysis.
• Excellent communication skills, a confident verbal communicator and ability to build relationships.
• Strong written communication skills including tailoring your message to the intended audience. Sharing learning and supporting the development of others through coaching and training sessions.
• Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changes in priority.


Essential Criteria

For the Specialist Corporation Tax Professional role, you will need to demonstrate:

• Experience of corporation tax compliance/work including at least one of transfer pricing, banking specific legislation, diverted profits tax, corporate finance, or hybrid arrangements in HMRC, practice or in industry.

Applicants must hold TPDP or predecessor qualifications (IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2) OR one of the following qualifications:

• Chartered Tax Adviser (CIOT)
• Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies membership qualification e.g. Institute of Chartered Accountant of England & Wales (ICAEW)
• Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) Institute of Chartered Accountants Ireland (ICAI)
• Chartered Institute of Public finance Accountancy (CIPFA)
• Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
• Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
• Holders of an Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT)
• Post Graduate full legal qualification in taxation matters


Desirable Criteria

• Experience of building capability in others through mentoring, coaching or other knowledge sharing.
• An understanding of the Financial or Insurance industry sectors is desirable but by no means essential as training will be provided
