We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Principal Transport Planner (Active Travel) to lead the development and delivery of innovative active travel programmes and infrastructure. This is an exciting senior leadership opportunity to drive transformational change in cycling, walking, micromobility and behaviour-change initiatives, helping create healthier, more sustainable and better-connected communities.

About the Role

As Principal Transport Planner (Active Travel), you will lead the strategic planning, development and delivery of major active travel schemes and programmes. You will play a key role in shaping transport networks that encourage sustainable travel choices, improve public health outcomes and support ambitious environmental goals.

Working across a diverse portfolio of projects, you will oversee the delivery of high-quality infrastructure, provide strategic transport planning expertise and ensure active travel considerations are embedded throughout development and regeneration programmes.

The role offers significant responsibility for securing and managing investment, sponsoring complex projects, managing consultants and external operators, and providing expert advice to senior stakeholders and decision-makers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and delivery of major active travel projects, including cycling, walking and micromobility initiatives.
  • Drive programmes that encourage sustainable travel behaviour and support mode shift.
  • Provide strategic transport planning expertise across a range of infrastructure and development projects.
  • Secure, manage and maximise external funding opportunities.
  • Act as project sponsor for complex and high-profile schemes, ensuring successful delivery from concept through to implementation.
  • Manage and oversee the work of consultants, contractors and external partners.
  • Provide authoritative advice and recommendations to senior leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Ensure projects deliver measurable outcomes in sustainability, accessibility, public health and carbon reduction.
